Do we need laws banning smoking in cars with kids?

Do you feel that we need to make a law that would punish parents for smoking in a car with there child? And do you feel that it is sad that parents can not make the right choice on this matter on there own. Also do ypu feel that this should be a child abuse ticket. And would this open the door for laws regarding smoking in the home were children are living?

It has has been known for years that second hand smoke can cause illness and death.

Or do you feel we should educate people on the dangers of smoking around there kids, and let them make the right choice? ie; this approach has not been working thus far. Can we stop this from happening with out a law to punish people?

Im all for smokers rights, but those rights end at another persons body. Clean air is a human right. I have the right to smoke, but I dont have the right to force my habit on people.

I agree to the last part, I have kids, I smoke. But I smoke out side no matter what, and I never smoke in the car with them. I smoke but my kids don't. Growing up my mom smoked in the house and car. I hated it, the smell would wake me up. You wouldn't think I would have started smoking. I wish I had never.

Side: Yes, parents are stupid

Thank you. I agree. Nicotine can cause migraines. It does for me.

Clean air is a human right.

No its not.

Besides, our actions as a species suggest that we care very little for the cleanliness of the air.

People who breathe second-hand smoke have more than 20% chance of getting lung cancer than people who don't. Would you kill somebody else for your own enjoyment?

My mom smoked in the car when I was a kid. I don’t agree with it but I don't hate her for it. Before I quit smoking I used to never smoke in the car, even if I didn’t have the kids with me. I wouldn’t even smoke in the house or around the kids if they were playing outside.

Laws don’t make people moral. People speed, tailgate, sit their kid in the front seat, run red lights... all regardless of their being laws that prohibit such things.

I would instead support the implementation of education and advertising. Not just to educate about the dangers of second hand smoke, but smoking in general.

I wouldn’t say we should make it illegal because that does nothing to solve the underlying issue. Let people smoke, but also let it be an informed decision to do so.

Very We'll Said... My mom smoked with us kids in the car as we'll, and in the house. But that was a different time. While smoking was just beginning to become a bad thing to do. Study's were still In the infancy stage.

I don't think this law would change much. It'd make a few stop, but it'd make the rest become technical criminals because they just don't care. As coldfire said, people break laws all the time. If people consider a law unworthy of being followed, they'll break it, simple as that.

A few 'crimes' I know of that I and several others break quite frequently, include Jaywalking, sodomy, open carry, not me but a few of my friends smoke weed.

Another thing as well is how the law would be enforced. Would police build checkpoints, of specially trained police that will investigate the cars of parents with kids in them to see if they have smoked a cigarette recently? It just doesn't seem practical.

Oregon has a law that is bans smoking in cars with minors. It is a 200 dollar fine. I am from Oregon and I now live in Ne, and I am hearing the talk of this law here as we'll. as for Enforcing it, it would be easy, I see people everyday smoking with children in the car. Either way the law wouldn't effect me, was just curious what others thought.

It would be easy to enforce it how? As a person who texts and drives occasionally, I would just put the phone down when the police are near, I imagine the parents would do something similar.

No waaaay. We need extra stuff like this to stunt the population density.

We also need more mass murderers, I don't think we have enough of those.

Parents smoke in their homes with kids there. The kids are inhaling it second hand everywhere. If you ban it one place you have to ban it everywhere.

Side: No, we don't need this law

I don't think such a law is necessary. If the smoking gets too intense, the windows can be rolled down.
