Do we truly live in a democracy?

Do we live in democracy? Why or why not?

Absolutely we do

I think that everything we say think and do is evidence of it, just read any amendment and this will become clear!

The existence of the amendments, and the way they have come about, is evidence that we aren't a Democracy.

Yes we do.

Technically, we are a representative Democracy, since we have the electoral college.

We are a democratic republic of confederated states.

We are the best nation in the world.

With the best form of government.

And the oldest Constitution!

Hope this helps.

Thanks!!

If you go by the definition of the word, we only have the 3rd oldest Constitution. The other two, the Magna Carta and the codified legal body of San Marino, fully fit the definition of "Constitution" despite not expressly calling themselves that, and both predate our Constitution.

As for best form of government, what metric would you use to determine that? I suppose same question for "best nation in the world" as well.

As I stated in another post, America has the oldest running Constitution that is still being used.

The Magna Carta is obviously a past relic and is no longer used in England.

Nah over the years we've slowly been inching our way toward socialism

Even if you are correct in your assessment of the USA you must remember we have countries who have Socialist Democracies.

France, Canada, Sweden, and a couple of the Scandinavian nations come to mind.

Thus, Socialisism and democracy need not be diametrically opposed. And indeed they usually are not.

Socialism and Democracy are not mutually exclusive. One is an economic system, one is a political system.

Side: Absolutely we do

We live in a democratic society, but not a "Democracy".

Colloquially it's semantics, but politically speaking the difference between a Democracy and our Constitutional Republic really show in situations like marriage rights, where the Judicial branch, working on behalf of the Constitutional, overruled the will of the people in multiple states. If we lived in a Democracy, the people would have been the final arbiter of the law.
