So far, the alternatives require modifications (like using viruses as vehicles) that can reduce their medical utility.
As to the argument that using them supports abortion, is like saying using spare parts from junkyards supports accidents.

Let's keep alive people alive. We do not need the religious right telling us what to do.

It's not about pro choice/life at all. Before long scientists will be able to create raw stem cells, and research now with embryonic stem cells might lead to a treatment for cancer that could cure millions of people much sooner than waiting for that to happen. There are lots of embryos used for fertility treatment, and people don't see it as murder when the extras are destroyed when the mother finally gets pregnant. Morally, curing millions of people should make embryonic stem cell research an imperative.

and I'm pro-choice... surprise!

I can predict that some diseases can be cured through embryonic stem cell research.

I don't agree with taking stem cells from aborted embryos as I believe this inherently means you support abortion. However, I think that Stem Cells have a huge potential to eliminate many degenerative diseases that are affecting millions of people. Some of the new research around alternative ways to get Stem Cells (besides from a fetus) look very promising to allow us to continue finding new cures but not at the expense of unborn children.
