Do you believe anything the government tells you?

Yes, there are many things that can be confirmed so if the question is "anything" then the obvious answer is yes.

I wouldn't say that government is great or that I even trust everything they say. I put up with their shit.

But on the other hand, I don't think that the government is out to get me. Sure, politicians lie, but not in order to kill off Americans (or something major like that).

I only believe in evidence. Sometimes it favors what the government says and sometimes it doesn't.

Side: YES, government is great!!

The government is not "great", but everything they say is not a lie that is set on hiding everything from us. You should surely be cautious about what the government tells you about certain issues like the current war, but that doesn't give somebody like Julian Assange the right to do what he did. He took the lives of American soldiers and operatives as well as Afghanis into his own hands potentially signing the death warrant of Afghan civilians. At the very least, he should have censored names.

Saying one does not trust anything the government says is just as dumb as saying you trust nothing.

One has to measure the source and establish any likely reasons the source would lie, and come to some logical conclusion.

Resent inarguable examples (even by prayerfail's standards):

1. Where they are telling the truth: The census gives Republicans a larger majority nationwide, yet we, yesterday with still a democratic majority in government, learned the results. If they were lying, they would not have lied against their own self-interest.

2. Where they should be questioned: Right and left with the most recent wikileaks leak, the founder has been demonized. Ignoring the actual facts, and which released information posed a real threat, all claimed the nation was in greater danger - yet, not a word of it so far seems to be anything that lessens national security. All that has been revealed seems to be embarrassing instances for world governments, politically damaging yes, but no negative effect on national security.

Further the past leaks lead to the same media and government outrage, yet nothing concrete that would in any way damage security.

Now they are spreading through the wire, that he is a rapist. A little study uncovers the founder's condom broke but the sex was consensual - that is hardly the picture the media has painted in their recent coverage.

It is safe to say the government's reaction to wikileaks is dishonest.

Of course, the government never tells lies and always acts in the best interest of the people, right? This is why we should do everything we can to ensure that our government grows bigger and more powerful, right?

We should even trust our government to the point of putting our health care into the most honest, caring hands and competent hands, right?

... I suspect you didn't read the part about "where they shouldn't be trusted" ><

Side: Somethings

The fact remains that government has only one agenda, and that is to gain power and control, and it will tell any lie in order to accomplish this goal.

The government never tells everything to the people, which is why you have so many governmental coverups and classified information.

Wikileaks shows that the government which even in Democratic socialism could tell lies.

What Julian Assange reported was nothing new. People had know about it for some time. Julian Assange is nothing but an attention whoring terrorist who threatened the lives of Afghani civilians who were trying to help our troops so we can bring them home sooner. He does not have the right to decide what should and should not be classified. He has committed blackmail, espionage and murder, and he should be brought to justice.

The United States federal government has lost its integrity for the most part... and as such has lost my implicit trust along with it.

Side: No, incompetent morons!!

I don't think anyone believes everything the Government tells them.
