Do you have another explanation for fish fossils on mount Everest?
When tectonic plates collide, terrain that was previously underwater is pushed upwards and mountains are formed. Their fossils go with them.
Do you have another explanation for the universe? ( not including evolution)
Evolution does not seek to explain this, but yes, there are other explanations for the origin of universe aside from God.
Do you know everything? I don't. If you know a little bit, isn't it possible that in what you don't know, there is God?
It is possible but just because something is possible doesn't mean you should believe it's true, especially when it is not supported by available evidence.
Or there was a big flood...you don't know...as in question #3
Well, give it to me then...
So you prefer to believe that after you die, it's over, and that no-one is out there, and that this earth is just spinning by itself, no-one guarding it?
Fine...this website is to display opinions, and i am entitled to mine.
By using rather simple methods we can determine the speed and direction a tectonic plate is moving. The Himalayas was formed by the collision between the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate. About 220 million years ago India was an island and the land that would later form the Himalayas was submerged in the Tethys ocean. The fossils which are found on the Himalayas include the Ammonite which went extinct roughly 65 million years ago long before humans ever lived.
If there was a global flood we would find a universal layer of silt within the geologic column across the world, precisely what we do not find. Also it would mean the extinction of all terrestrial life.
Not only does what you're saying have no evidence, it actually has LESS than no evidence. In that, there is strong evidence that it didn't happen that way.
So you prefer to believe that after you die, it's over
You will find that what you prefer to be true, and what is actually true are two often different things.
and that no-one is out there, and that this earth is just spinning by itself, no-one guarding it?
Why would anyone be guarding earth, or even need to?
Fine...this website is to display opinions, and i am entitled to mine.
You are entitled to your opinion just as I am entitled to my opinion. My opinion is that your opinion is grossly misinformed.
The "Laws of Nature" are clearly changeable by the one who made them simply because you cannot comprehend how a flood would happen without this layer of silt does not mean that it is impossible.
That your argument is contingent upon an event being "not impossible" means you need a new argument.
That God (an unproven entity) changed the laws of nature (an unproven event) so that there would be no universal silt layer following Noah's Flood (another unproven event) would serve no purpose except to fill the holes in Creationist arguments.
I feel a Bill Hicks quote is quite apt in answering this argument:
"These people actually believe that the world is Twelve thousand years old. But I actually asked this guy, "OK, dinosaur fossils-- how does that fit into your scheme of life? What's the deal?" He goes:
"God put those here to test our faith."
"I think God put you here to test my faith, dude. I think I've figured this out."
Does that-- That's what this guy said. Does that bother anyone here? The idea that God might be fucking with our heads? Anyone have trouble sleeping restfully with that thought in their head? God's running around burying fossils: "Ho ho! We'll see who believes in me now, ha ha! I'm a prankster God. I am killing me, ho ho ho!" You know? You die, you go to St. Peter:
"Did you believe in dinosaurs?"
"Well, yeah. There were fossils everywhere. (trapdoor opens) Aaaaarhhh!"
"You fuckin' idiot! Flying lizards? You're a moron. God was fuckin' with you!"
Even if no single theory is currently adequate, this does not mean God is responsible. Gaps in human knowledge should not be filled with the supernatural.
So you prefer to believe that after you die, it's over, and that no-one is out there, and that this earth is just spinning by itself, no-one guarding it?
It's not about a matter of what I prefer to believe, but what I am able to believe. Of course I would prefer to believe in some of the more positive aspects of the Christian faith, but with no evidence to support it, I just can't.
I'm going to presume that you are a Christian. Why are you a Christian? Because you happened to have been brought up in a Christian Family. Why aren't you a Hindu? Because you weren't born in India. If you were born in India, you'd be a Hindu. If you were born in Central Africa, you'd be believing in strange mountain gods.
Use your brain, however reassuring and pleasant it is, God does not exist.
What is your point? Just because he is Christian due to his upbringing is of little consequence. Why God doesn't heal all the amputees is also of little consequence. You should use your brain before telling others to do the same for it is said:" You hypocrite first take the plank out of your own eye and then you may see clearly to see the speck in your brothers eye." Matthew 7:5.
okay there was a book written before the bible was written and way before the date of noah's arc crap called "The Flood of Gilgamesh" LOOK IT UP!!! then maybe that will give you a lil insite as to why people are calling you ignorant you know like your being :D
For all of you who struggle believing the Bible you ought to read Heaven is For Real by Todd Burpo. Its very compelling The book is about a child who dies and goes to heaven. Although I suspect the majority of you will deign not to.
"A young man who wishes to remain a sound atheist cannot be too careful of his reading."
For all of you who struggle believing the Bible you ought to read Heaven is For Real by Todd Burpo. Its very compelling The book is about a child who dies and goes to heaven.
I was watching this on Red Eye on Fox News; they were implying that the dad probably just helped the kid write the story.
The writer (the kid) is real, and he really did die for a few minutes. The thing is, he was about 3 or something and didn't write the book until years later. He says shit like Jesus having sky blue eyes.
I believe in God, because I've seen the benifit chrisitainity can do to communities. I've also seen how bad communities can be that lack a belief in something better than they are.
Many people dislike Chrisitianity solely because of the restrictions on things like sex, they then believe anything against Chrisitianity because they themselves fear that if the religion is proved correct they then have to stop doing the many "sinful" things that they would rather do.
Fair enough, many people do dislike Christianity for their restrictions on things like sex, although I would say that dislike of Christianity goes beyond just that.
I believe in the God of the Bible. And its the only true God. Enough said I just want to say that. I already enough with a diffrent debate about God and all some of the Athiests are doing is saying we dont that he did do this and that. And some of you try to brainwash me into thinking that there is no God when there is. When you die God will deal with you and he will talk to you. I did my part on so many debates and no one thinks its the truth all you do is reject my message and come up with some false things that I am not going to even look at. Please to try to reply to me about all your false crap.
I can't answer this debate. Some parts of me believe and some parts don't. And there are parts of me that wanna believe. I understand that you are curious about the creation of the universe and the existence of fossils on Mount Everest. However, if im wrong, people in the Egyptian times thought that droughts was a punishment from God. And there are people in history that believe that storms is a sign that God is angry or unhappy.
But as times go on, we have solutions. We have solutions to when and why we have rain and droughts. It is all a part of nature. Now, we don't have valid solutions for the creation of the universe and the fossils on Mount Everest, but that doesn't mean that there is a God.
I do believe that there is a God because A LOT of people do. Could we all be so ignorant to believe in such a higher power? Or is it something that God installed in our brains to makes us to believe? And that is what i believe in. That we were all created by God so that is why we FEEL that God's exist. That is makes SOME logical sense. Like a son realizing that "this" woman and "this" man are his parents.
The word "God" may mean different for different people. For some it may be an unimaginable mysterious power, idol and pictures for others, some may believe nature and sun, moon or energy, fire or water for some. But whatever it may be, one thing common between them is that they remember that representation to gather strength and hope during their difficult times. If god of bible is such a representation for me whom i think about during difficult times, then yes i believe in it.
If the God of the Bible does exist, I will go to heaven because I believe in Him. If he does not, then nothing will happen. There's more of an upside to believing in God.
Well, yes. But it's only because of fear. "Believe in me, or you'll go to hell." Whoever says that Christianity, or any similar religion, isn't fear-based is wrong. (This is not tongue-in-cheek. I only believe in God because I don't want to suffer forever. I'm already in constant pain, on earth.)
If God wasnt real, what are the odds that our planet went through evolution? Why our planet? Why not another plant? Its obvious that aliens do not exist, so why did only our planet evolve?
Its obvious because of the technology we have today, Scientists would have been able to prove that aliens exist by now... Yes you could say the same thing about the God of the Bible. But this is my faith. The question is, "Do you believe the God of the Bible?" And yes I do... So yeah... thats my opinion and belief just like you believe in the Creationist Myth.
Its obvious because of the technology we have today, Scientists would have been able to prove that aliens exist by now...
No it isn't current technology can't even tell us all about our own solar system let alone galaxy, that's to say nothing of the vast universe that lies beyond, what do you know of modern technology that you can make such a statement?
Yes you could say the same thing about the God of the Bible. But this is my faith.
Again not really, we know life can exist, so it is not completely absurd to suggest that it exists on a different planet. We don't know that anything supernatural exists so it is not absurd to state that it may not
And yes I do... So yeah... thats my opinion and belief just like you believe in the Creationist Myth.
From where did you get the assumption that I believe the creationist myth, because I'll state right now that I don't I would assume that because you believe in the christian God that you do.
look, first of all when you bold out what i said, you can just refer to what i said, and just chill out okay? And yes I'm sorry i made a wrong assumption about you and the Creationist Myth... Its just my faith okay? Lets just agree to disagree?
"look, first of all when you bold out what i said it kinda makes u look like a douche"
Actually its good way to structure arguments, and is very useful in highlighting flaws in certains points people have made, this is especailly useful when responses are long. It helps separate out which arguments are valid and which are invalid instead of have one big mess of text to decipher,
yeah... my beliefs is implausible and unsound... but thats why it is my "faith". do you know the definition of faith? It is believing in something you cant touch, taste, smell, hear, or see. Just because you keep arguing with me and telling me I'm wrong isn't going to change the way i think and believe... and I know if i keep pestering you about how you think and what you believe, its not going to change what you believe... so it is a pointless argument...
Its just my belief... its hard to explain... Why do you believe in evolution (assuming you do)... My best guess would because its logical... Its just the way I feel and I am sorry that i cant describe it to you... I only endorse it to people that are lost, or confused. I'm not saying if your Atheist your wrong, its just my opinion...
I bold the points so they can be clearly distinct from my own words, and give you an Indication of which particular points I'm disputing. This is something that is done on this site when disputing and calling me a douche only makes you look like a retard.
It doesn't matter that you made a wrong assumption and apologies aren't necessary.
I also didn't dispute your faith, I disputed your claim that it is a definite that aliens do not exist.
how can u say that god isnt real and wen he comes to earth to take his people you will be sorry and for everybody who picked with all my heart god bless u comrades
Yes, I believe in God! But, coming from no religion. (Though I officially follow a religion). To me God is simply faith. It is that supernatural power that we are trying to break the code of.
The Bible is a book written by men for men, look im not some militant athiest but you must realise that the Bible, tht Koran, the Upanishads, the Tibetan book of the dead, the Torah, etc. etc. are books and scriptures written by men, they may have been holy men but they were men. Thinking anything else makes no sense whatsoever, we actually know the men who wrote most of these religious texts and doctrines what in the world makes you think God wrote them?
God is Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Ptolemy, Tesla, Einstein, Hubble, Heisenberg, Da' Vinci, Edison....all the individuals that added upon our shared knowledge of the working universe. All the while questioning the accepted beliefs and starring persecution/death in the eyes because of their unyielding faith in human evolution through thought, questioning everything that they were taught as being the norm.
Da vinci and Aristotle hardly faced persecution. Da Vinci if i am not mistaken worked for the Medici's and was quite protected. Aristotle taught Alexander the Great their wasn't much thought to persecuting two so well protected.
in my personal opinion i do not believe in god, there are many other religions out there before Christ that have the same birthday, same death, arose 3 days later... you get the point, plus there are fossils on this planet and there is nothing in the bible that says anything about dinosaurs, people say that its god's way of testing our faith but i think of that as a load of bs considering the fact that there is no proof of that within its self...
watch: zeitgeist, im sure after seeing that your faith will fall along with believing that the government is trying to help out...
After reading the Bible, I came to the conclusion that the god therein is no god I would personally revere nor would I condone other people's reverence to.
Furthermore, I feel that there are many questions regarding the OP that would need to be answered before a proper answer is given such as:
1. Does the god of the Bible actually exist?
2. Who or what is the "God of the Bible?"
3. Which interpretation/translation of the Bible is the correct one in determining who or what the god of the Bible is?
4. Is it possible that the god of the Bible is an incorrect interpretation of who or what God really is? If so, how can anyone who believes in a god know for sure whether or not the god they believe in is or was intended to be the "God of the Bible?"
I'm sure there can be many other questions, but as I stated before and to reiterate; based on what I read regarding abrahamic/biblical texts to include Judaism, Christianity and Islam, I have not found anything that I could, would, or condone others to revere, let alone believe in.
If you wish to have a debate about where the Earth came from, create a debate for that.
In your description, you said you just wanted to see what everyone believes in, yet you down vote anyone who says that they don't believe in God and then ask them random questions on creation.
It really bothers me when people make a debate and then debate within it.That is why I choose not to create any the temptation would be too great and then I would be a hypocrite. So I am asking you to stop.
What are you talking about? How could I have met him? I stated that he as he is taught in the bible is not worth anyone's faith, and is an evil entity.
God is evil compared to what? Is a ruler evil for defending his people? For establishing a home for them in which they may prosper? Because if that is true then there is no good man in all of history and their never will be. God through all his supposedly evil doings had a master plan one that came to its fruition in Christ. Everything that happened before that was all a set up. For example the wealth of the Egyptians. If the Israelites were to establish a nation they would need wealth would they not? In order to give them said wealth God orchestrated the rise of Egypt and as his people began their Exodus they looted the Egyptians and gained enough money to establish a home and fund an army.
Well, Me for one, and my children and just about everyone I know.
Is a ruler evil for defending his people? For establishing a home for them in which they may prosper? Because if that is true then there is no good man in all of history and their never will be.
Man and God are not the same thing, God is supposed to be perfect, man is supposed to be flawed.
God through all his supposedly evil doings had a master plan one that came to its fruition in Christ.
So God's master plan was to be an evil horrible mass murderer and then end all that by appearing on the Earth in the form of a man so he could be brutally slaughtered, for what purpose?
Everything that happened before that was all a set up. For example the wealth of the Egyptians. If the Israelites were to establish a nation they would need wealth would they not? In order to give them said wealth God orchestrated the rise of Egypt and as his people began their Exodus they looted the Egyptians and gained enough money to establish a home and fund an army.
Why not just orchestrate the rise of the Israelite people, honestly, think about this, God wanted his people to have funding so he made another people rich so they could be looted, and you say he isn't evil, give me a break.
um...you seem to know His personality quite well, and you have not met Him?
I know exactly as much as you should, because I read the bible.
Do you read minds?
What? I honestly think you don't have an argument.
If God was not real, and in the Word He is portrayed as good, then how do you know He is bad if He does not exist?
I urge you to read both my post and your bible because you clearly don't understand either. My comments were made on the teachings of the bible, not on personnel accounts.
Actually to be correct nobody has met him and they wont until he comes to earth or whatever it says in the bible, I am agnostic so there could be a higher power but i doubt its the god of the bible. i need more proof than a stupid bible that tells stupid stories that Ive heard before from other religions.
I do not believe in the God of the Bible, no. I do believe in God; I believe in a God so inexplicably immense, complicated, and intelligent that it transcends all human understandings of physics and logic: it is a being we will never even come close to imagining, let alone knowing of. Why is the Christian God a giant man living in the clouds that feels love and compassion and hatred and disappointment and rage and care? Because all humanity can imagine is what humanity can see and hear and feel and smell and taste, and our imagination is just combinations of what we already know. Thus, the God we've thought of for so long is a human God, because that's just the smartest thing we know of.
I think of something that thinks of everything down to the path of every quark in the whole of this ever-expanding creation, not a man that likes to admire his own walking creations on one tiny, muddy spec of a spec of a spec of the universe, and create entire dimensions meant to torture or reward their insignificant little souls.
