Do you consider items to be more special when purchased in a country other than your own?

My shirt comes from Pakistan, my jeans come from Colombia, my boxers are from Vietnam and just about everything else is from China. Almost everything I own comes from another country! Half of this stuff isn't very important to me though. If my shirt were to rip, I'd throw it away and go buy a new one... no big deal. However, if I were to lose something that I actually acquired while in a different country, then I'd be pissed.

All of this makes me think of how people try to charge more here in the States on certain items by saying, for example, "These shoes are made from genuine Italian leather". So what!? The marker used to write down the price is probably from China. Is the marker special? Genuine Chinese ink. If I were a shoe salesman I'd try to charge more for some Nikes by arguing that they're from Indonesia, therefore they are special.

Side: Yes

Not really. They are just items.

I think it's the memories that go along with the items purchased in different countries that make them special. Buying a shirt from the store down the road isn't going to have the same sentimental value as one bought during a trip to Rome.

Who has a shirt with sentimental value? That's weird... like seriously; it's a shirt.

I don't. I don't put much value in items, unless they serve an actual purpose, and have real world application. For example, a phone; A very useful tool, I wouldn't go anywhere without it, if I was without one and in need of a call, I'd eagerly spend money to use someone else's. A phone as opposed to a camera, that would only give me photogenic proof of where I've been, when I have my own memory.

The contrary actually.

I was mainly referring to souvenirs. You don't think a souvenir that you've purchased from another country would be more important than something you can easily reacquire back home?

Side: Yes

I suppose so but it depends on the souvenir. There are some really interesting ones I have acquired but the vast majority of souvenirs is just tat any way.

no... I think most people who do buy them and actually keep them forever are HOARDERS. kidding. maybe not lol but its like buying something in china and keeping it forever then seeing it in some cheap dollar store or something rather.
