Do you know what God is?

I look at all these debates on whether God is real or not but I ask you people do you even know what God is? Hint: He isn't a man with a white beard living in the clouds I will tell you that.

Sure, it is a word that, if another person uses it in a conversation with me, I must exert considerable effort to understand what they mean. Most often it refers to an entity (or book) that they trust/value excessively (worship) with little inquiry.

'God' is a concept, authority and/or symbol conceived by humans to explain extraordinary events, to unite and control people to work towards common goals, and/or to act as the perfect role-model whose qualities and/or actions are to be duplicated to the best of the abilities of the worshipping practitioner.

God(s) is/are everywhere and nowhere as the idea of him/her/it/them is/are ingrained in the human mind, yet nonexistent in the natural world. The average human being will not be able to interact directly with (a) God with absolute certainty that what he/she is 'interacting' with is actually God; instead, most humans must place faith in the words of a minority who truly believe they can interact directly with God.

The idea of God(s) is fed and reinforced perpetually by various cultural forces and the inability of individuals to comprehend bizarre, marvelous and/or inconceivable phenomena on a regular basis. However, as science has progressed evermore to explain a staggering number of natural phenomena, especially those once classified as 'miracles', human belief in God has been dwindling increasingly.

Ultimately, no one can be certain of what God truly is because, like the ideas in a novel, there can be many interpretations of the same ideas that were devised by other fellow humans. Unless humans today are able to interrogate the many people who originally spread the various ideas of 'God', we may never know what each of the hundreds of known Gods truly are.

The power that religions call God was recognized as the power of creation. How is everything created? Energy. The energy that surrounds us, and binds us, and makes up everything that exists. So in a manner of speaking, EVERYTHING is God and God is everything.

Side: yes

God is energy. Energy controls everything and is everything.

I'm actually quite fond of this idea, even though I'm about to post on the opposite side.

This is what we call Pantheism. Welcome to the club. Everyone is a member, but most don't know it yet.

God is a concept of a consciousness higher than our own that for whatever reason has done something to create or set in motion what we know now.

But whatever, concepts are concepts. This is kind of a dumb debate because everyone is going to say yes, and almost every answer is going to be different.

Of course we know who God is. He is the Creator of the universe.

As if someone could not know who He is! Silly atheists ;)

Thats actually a good question.I know he's there, an I know what he does for us.

I know God is:

love

peace

hope

what do you think?

It is very interesting to see everyone interpreting God in their own way. Your concepts definitely describe a large part of Him, I am certain of that .

I am assuming that you are referring to the Christian God. Simply look up the definition, and you will find it.

"the supernatural being conceived as the perfect and omnipotent and omniscient originator and ruler of the universe"

-----

I'll also bring up my topical bible on the term as well:

God is: authoritative; compassionate; creator of everything, including mankind; a deliverer; Everlasting; a father figure; good; graceful; Holy; Incomparable; Invisible; Immutable; Incomprehensible; Infinite; Jealous; a Judge; just; a leader; Love; manifested in many forms; merciful; Omnipotent; Omniscient; one; Perfect; Powerful; Preserver; a punisher; redeemer; righteous; self-existent; sovereign; a spirit; a teacher; three persons in one (trinity); truthful; unchanging; unsearchable; wise

Why assume God is Christian?

God is a big flying spaghetti monster. He touches our hearts with his noodly appendage.

But he is supernatural, perfect, omnipotent, and the creator and ruler of the universe. That much is true.

I assume that if you capitalize 'g', you are referring to the monotheistic Hebrew one. You may assume differently, but this is purely subjective. By the way, I didn't find 'big flying spaghetti monster' describing God in my topical bible. :)

I know who God is - I don't think He suits the label 'what' somehow. Do you know who He is ?

Most of the believers don't really care what God is..

But, God is most often an Existing faith.. A tool for guidance.. For support!

To know you are not wrong!

Sometimes God is reason.. A weapon for Revenge! To call your terrorist acts justifiable and Godly!

To convince you are right.

God is a source to call yourself right and accuse others to be wrong.

God is a stick you use to walk.. Walk on the wrong road but call it 'MY LORD'S ROAD!'

God is the most pure word of the ages..

It is now the most misused Word!

Nobody knows "what" God is exactly. Some religions might have a figurehead for God, others might say he's "everything around us", and others might not have any clear knowledge of their God, others say that he is only a manifestation of human thought. Really, nobody can truly could know "what" exactly he is, maybe who he is, but what is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.

Side: No but people have their own opinions

I actually like this point. People always try to talk about whether God exists, but in order to argue on whether something exists or not you first have to know what that element is.

There are many different versions of God, but for an Agnostic, what God REALLY is is unknown. I don't believe in the religious interpretation of God, but another version of God, maybe a definition not used, is the real God.

Who knows, I sure as hell don't.

No, I don't, and neither do you. We can speculate and imagine and give our best guesses, but in the end, none of us knows what God is. I just wish we could all admit it.

Yes I do know what God is. It's actually very simple if you think about it.

Side: yes
Spoonerism(831) Disputed

It's not simple. It's an issue that has been a part of human consciousness for as long as people have been around. Your idea about God is interesting, and one that is very close to my own, but again you do not know, you have an idea, a belief.

Side: No

You say you know what God is but don't explain it...can you please do so. Maybe that would help some of us who are not at all certain.

Side: No

In my religion God is everything...the begining and the end of all things here on earth. I don't think He is that man with the white beard but I don't exactly know what He is. He must know how to communicate if He sent Jesus to tell us of His laws and desires but how He commicated that is a mystery to me.

Since you go on to describe what you think He is, surely this post qualifies to be in the 'yes' column as opposed to the 'no' column which is for people who specifically do not know who He is.

in my 1947 websters new twentieth century dictionary it says nothing of the sort in regards to god being a creator of the universe, however it does state how the word god was originally applied to heathen deities and then later elevated to the christian sense. there is no connection between god and good nor was the conception of goodness prominent in the heathen conception of a deity.

Side: yes

I don't believe in God.

I THINK God may be the leader humans want to follow. We are sheep(metaphorically) and must need to believe in a greater purpose. God is an illusion humans love to blame, follow and worship.

Just some pathetic psychology of an ignorant 13yr old. Hehe.
