Do you think teachers should be allowed to hit students again?
Take for example this clip from China.

From what I gather she is being hit for either answering a question wrong or failing a test.

Absolutely. Not in any extreme form that might cause physical damage though, and I don't think it should be used as a punishment for academic performance. If a student is being disruptive or disobedient and previous warnings and punishments have failed to resolve the issue, I think it's perfectly acceptable to slap, belt, or paddle. I had a principle who was quite fond of the cattle prod for unruly students, and it was the most orderly school I have ever seen. Side: yes
Absolutely yes - and must. Those who think students shouldn't be slapped mostly are afraid of their students or children's being hurt or suffering (also the trouble consequently caused). This is why some students can never improve their academic results. Why don't we apply pressure to children? For fear of their sadness? Everything satisfying is right!? Everyone has to be absolutely clear that being fond of playing is a human nature, because of which studying has to be an action that struggles against human nature, which no one wants. No one is willing to study without applying pressure. No one has the self-controlling ability until great pressure or struggle falls on him. The species which don't like playing had existed, and all of them were obsoleted by the natural world. All still-existings like playing. However, the modern society requires species which have strong self-controlling abilities, which has to be formed under great pressure. Yes to any punishment - except the deathly ones. Side: Yes

Punishing a student through force may be a good temporary solution, but in the long run, it brings nothing but negativity into everyone's lives. The student could grow up to hate teachers and become insecure. He could even start to resent people. The teacher, on the other hand, could start to be resented by his/her students thus, ultimately lowering the effectiveness of the class. All in all it will definitely affect the relation between the student and the teacher in a bad way. Side: No

Forgive me for being facetious and facile, but I am disposed to think hitting people uncivilised. It is likely to breed resistance rather than submission. Prone to suppress discourse and not to promote learning. A society that is founded upon the Rights of Man yet which denies them to its most vital and vulnerable asset is an abhorrence that no righteous man could abide. To solve with violence what we are capable of resolving with wit, to beat rather than to instruct, is to display a want of the propriety that our educational institutions are supposed to promote and define.
