We can call a description adequate if it accurately describes at least a part of the nature or one aspect of the nature of something. There can be other aspects or parts of an aspect that can be described with other description, be they popular or not. If the description is inaccurate then it does not describe its nature adequately.

As for whether a description determines the nature of something..it can to an extent, if the 'something' is intangible. If people describe 'marriage' in a certain way then it becomes that way. Marriage, for example, has meant between man and woman but now people start using the word to mean two people of the same gender, the concept has changed.
