Does anybody really like thinking anymore?

Emerson, Thoreau, Nietsche, Marx - all considered great thinkers. Who do we have for our day and age?

I'm not sure that many people ever did -- or could afford to do so.

Thinking requires time. Unthinking action is speedier, if not always the best option. Thinking time is often leisure time, free from the cares and woes of the work a day world. Leisure time is often a luxury. It requires a sufficient amount of resources to do, essentially, nothing.

In fact, the flowering of Greek philosophy took place when enough Greeks were well enough off to support a bunch of bums doing nothing more than sitting around pondering things.

The Greeks got rich largely from the trade in olive oil. Also, shipping the oil to other countries allowed the Greeks to become exposed to other cultures and to bring back new ideas to about which to think.

Next time you see an ocean going vessel or a bottle of olive oil on the store shelf, make sure to thank them for making our Western Civilization possible.

Richard Rorty (Contingency, Irony and Solidarity), Paul De Man (Comedy of the Falling Man), Derrida, Franz Fanon (Black Skin, White Mask), Aime Cesaire (Colonialism), Sartre, Edward Said (Orientalism), Quine, Plantinga, Fukuyama (End of History), Frederic Jameson, Michel Foucault (Heterotopias), Marcuse, Alan Watts, Levinas, Paulo Freire ... others I can and can't think of off the top of my head. Me when I'm working for academic purposes... and not just fooling around :D. Thinking as a part of a greater academic and intellectual practice hasn't really been lost, it's just no longer emphasized.

And that is precisely the problem - thinking is not emphasized. Confucius, Buddha, Emerson - history is riddled with men considered 'great thinkers' but there doesn't seem to be nearly as many, or at least nearly as many impressive, thinkers.

You asked what thinkers we have for our day and age. I just named around 15 off the top of my head. The fact that thinking isn't emphasized doesn't mean there aren't great thinkers out there. There are literally millions of them, all producing exceptional and novel work.

Bloggers.

Bloggers are mostly well educated individuals with specific topics in mind. They spend hours, days and years pondering... thinking.

Film Makers.

Art evolved. A mesh of novel and canvas.

The perception that no one thinks any more is do to a saturation of the thinking field by those succombing to a 140 character limit.

If you look, you can find a worthwhile thought.

I don't trust bloggers.

I don't trust filmmakers.

Come to think of it, I trust nobody.

However, if you get your dose of 'great thinking' from watching movies, you mustn't read nearly enough.

Well, you're quite the judgemental pissant.

I'm sorry that you have trust issues, not my problem, talk to your shrink.

Right-wind bloggers. Not so much big on thinking. They are more often stinkers than thinkers.
