Drugs open the mind.

It has been said over an over by the lowest and highest of revered people that drugs essentially free or open the mond. Do you agree? Have you ever had experiences which support your view? Which drugs are thereby most prone to "open your mind"?

Drugs certainly do let you think in new ways, but what you fill your opened mind up with after that is up to you.

You think drugs will ruin a person? What does it mean to ruin a person? People looking down on you for doing it, trying to feel haughty and righteous? Or being poor?

If you are happy in life, and able to manage drugs ok without stealing or getting addicted, I see no problem. Most psychoactive drugs have few dangerous effects, if taken carefully.

However, who gets to define when it's a problem? What is the purpose of life? Is it to relax and do drugs and think about crazy stuff or to get money, a family other things like that? If you get a choice in how you live, then people who wish to go for drugs should be able to do so if they think it opens their mind. Whether or not it aids in learning is controversial, but there is evidence that it is not just some looney burn-out hobby.

Good or bad, drugs are just chemicals. How you use them is what is important, but being able to think about completely new things in new ways is something only drugs can let you do.

It depends, if you take drugs because your are unhappy and use them as a way to bring you into a state of euphoria just to escape depression for a bit, than no, your not opening your mind. But if you are happy in life and you experiment with some drugs it can open your mind and get new perspectives.

Some drugs do, some drugs don't.

Acid, shrooms, pot, various others are mind/consciousness-expanding, in both my opinion as a user (though I prefer the word "psychonaut"), and in the opinions of many other psychonauts and researchers. However, as Timothy Leary said in the '80s, there are some consciousness-closing drugs. I view non-psychedelics as being mind-closing, and have never supported their use.

Then, as Terence McKenna well says, television is probably just about the worst drug:

Try some LSD. Your mind will become so open your brains may even fall out ;)

I don't have much of an accurate view of it, as I haven't done any, but like others say, drugs are bound to, as it alters your mental state.

Depending on which ones, LSD, DMT, and most phycadelics, yes. Heroin, benzodiazepines, barbiturates and opiates (substances of the sort), no.

I have yet to meet someone who, let's say, for the sake of argument, is against gay marriage...., then they took drugs and they were like, "Oh yeah..., I'm all for it now."

I mean, if that was the case, then gays would put drugs in our water supply in order to convert the non-believers ;)

I only hope I haven't given the liberals any ideas ;)

No they do not (unless anybody uses it for "creativity"........

Have you ever used LSD?

If not, then how could you possibly know? It is easy to mock another for doing something, but until you've tried, it can you really know just based on 2nd hand information and your own opinion?

They don't? Have you ever eaten magic mushrooms? Have you ever taken LSD? Have you ever smoked weed? Go do all of the three and then tell me it doesn't open your mind.

It can certainly make you think new thoughts, but so can reading a book, and you can evaluate those new thoughts much better if you're sober.

Yes, but the types of thoughts are much different. It's really a "You don't know what it's like until you do it" sort of thing.

I have read lots of books and played video games, I have looked at art and made art, but all the things those make me feel and think and very very very different from what drugs like LSD or shrooms do. The thoughts and feelings while on drugs like that are so completely different that it's not really possible to compare the sort of things you think about while thinking sober thoughts to things you think about while tripping.

But are those thoughts valid, or simply the result of a mind being thrown out of whack?

Also, I think we need to look back at the original question "Do drugs open the mind?" and define what it means to "open the mind". I don't think simply experiencing drug induced psychotic episode necessarily qualifies as "opening the mind". You need to have an effect that lasts after the drugs are gone, something that changes the way you think.

Having never done anything harder than alcohol or pot, I can't answer this question, and I'm sure I can trust the answer of someone whose brain has been altered by harder drugs, so I'm not sure there's anything you can say that would change my mind, but please, don't let that stop you. :)

Also, I don't think you can just say that people who do harder drugs are more open-minded, and that therefore drugs must open your mind, since you probably have to have a pretty open mind to begin with if you're going to experiment with drugs.
