English is the most complicated language in the world

For example: how is this word pronounced: "ghoti"?

Well, if you think about the

  • 'gh' in 'rough'
  • 'o' in 'women'
  • 'ti' in 'nation'

then the word would be pronounced like 'fish'.

ghoti sounds kinda like phosh. That's incontroversial proof right there.

Sorry, I made a mistake in the description, look at the edited description. Now it's definitely pronounced like fish.

We Americans grew up speaking English but when I started learning Spanish it made more sense then English. Most words are pronounced just as they are spelt in Spanish. Not in English.

It's a hard language to learn if you haven't been brought up it being your native language. If you re from... Hungary lets say and you weren't brought up speaking English it would be very hard for you to learn because of all of the different words. Verbs, nouns, adjectives, irregular verbs etc. It becomes very hard to get a grip of. I think it's also been proven for it to be one of the hardest languages to learn.

Probably one of the hardest parts about English is the amount of "rules" there are. And more-so, the amount of times that the "rules" must be broken in order to be correct.

Side: No doubt

Well, I obviously have not learned every single language, so I can't really say yes with 100% confidence. But I have taken a couple years of Spanish so far, and a lot of languages are similar to that of Spanish, and it has a system that works for almost everything, it makes sense unlike our language, English. It is a lot harder for people to learn English as their second language than it is for us to learn any of language as our second language.

Ancient Greek. English is simple compared to it. Professors who have studied Ancient Greek for 10 years can barely even speak it.

Bullshit, Ancient Greek is quite simple language, just have irregular verbs as many other languages... it takes about 2 years to learn as most of languages.

Obviously, no matter what language your native tongue is, everyone will have a bit of a bias here. For Americans, I've read that Japanese is one of the hardest languages to pick up, if only because of the incredibly complicated writing system it entails.

Japanese is not so bad, Thai is :D or Finnish that's hard :D

Yeah I've heard Finnish is very difficult. Hungarian is another tough language.

its called common sense why would you shed a tear, as in a rip, when a tear, as in a rip, was in the painting? you just have to think what would make sense

Thai/Khmer is really insane language.

English is the simplest language I've learnt.

The oriental languages, such as Japanese, are much more complicated. Japanese has three alphabets- Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana... as well as a thousand odd symbols at varying levels of complexity- some are really difficult to draw.

Double post.

You have one of the most simple grammar rules. Have you ever studied german? latin? These are not even the most complicated languages on earth, still they are way more complicated than english.

I've actually studied both, and both are easier than English I believe. Apart from the articles, German has relatively simple, patterned grammar. Latin is actually incredibly patterned, there are very few exceptions to its rules.

I guess it's just about opinion then. I based my opinion on that german and latin both have 'cases' which makes everything kinda .. confusing :)

It's pretty bad, I won't lie, but Asian languages are pretty hard to. Or I should say any language that doesn't use the 26 character style we're used to.

No it's the most easy one no it can be learned really easily because it doesn't have so many exception

and according to the description, i'd say, English is more of a funny language. :P

I don't think English is the most complex language.

Chinese characters represent words, and there or thousands of Chinese characters. The pronunciation is even worse. each character has it's own separate sound.

Side: Obviously not

I think it is complicated but with all the languages in the world it would be unlikely for it to be the most complicated, I have heard that Thai is very complicated.

Finnish is even more complicated.
