Everyone should join the military

My argument is that I feel every young man or woman should join the military cause it builds character discipline and respect

1. Give an individual  the opportunity to learn more about world

2. it teaches responsibility

3. it gives a great appreciation  of life as a whole

this is what I have or starters

Enjoy everyone no cussing and treat everyone with respect

I would go for having this requirement for those who are not going on to further schooling after high school. It would give them many opportunities they would not have otherwise and can further their education at the same time.

Well I think that it should be encouraged. And a lot of people I got to school with that don't plan on going to collage plan on the military.

But a requirement? What if they have other plans in mind? What if they want to start their own business from scratch? That would be taking away the opportunity.

While that would definitely encourage more kids to go to college, it would not be good for the labor force. There would be no people in the middle. Many people simply choose to get a job, and become successful at that.

For example, Ellen Degeneres spoke at Tulane University last week. She reminded the graduates that she had no degree, and look how successful she was. Many people simply have talents and skills that don't have a need for refinement. Others might not want a big fancy job, and might just want to stay at the kwik-e-mart.

This is a free country, and the freedom to chose your profession is not something we're going to give up easily.

For Jake & Pineapple. There was a time in this country when being drafted into the Armed Forces was virtually a given and most guys did have to go, especially in times of turmoil. I certainly wouldn't wish to take an opportunity, like a business starter from scratch and make him/her go but I still believe that it would be in their best interests to go for a two year stint and further your education and expand you mind as to possibilities. There were also different classifications for those who were "called up" to service that would get you a deferment if wanted or needed. There is nothing wrong with serving your country in any way we can, if we can.

I even tried it once but was only in for six weeks when I was hospitalized for the second time in 4 months. I decided it was not for me and took the opportunity to remove myself when it came. I actually hated it! I think I was too old (27) and too self sufficient for it anyway. I don't take orders well at all and most especially when they're in place simply to break your spirit and mind! Had I been just out of High School it may have worked, but alas! It was not to be.

I feel that a two year service should be mandatory, because look at Israel each one of there citizens are required to join the military and then they keep the guns they use. Now they are one of the most threatening countries in the middle east.

Either way we gotta enlist when we turn 18 cuz its the law so why not join plus you living in this country too iknow you prolly hate it or the government fucked up but it dont matter cuz we all got the same rights n we all americans n so we gotta thank this country n fight for peace

a volunteer military is much more successful than a non-volunteer military.

plus, with a volunteer military it's a lot easier to say "you must support what they WANT to do in order to support the troops". good way to give a hard time to anti-war protesters. how do you support the troops by forcing them to not do what they want to do?

in Vietnam which had a huge fuckin' draft 100s of thousands of troops died.

in the same amount of years, about, only a few thousand troops have died in this current War on Terror. this war has used a volunteer military.

While I understand what you're getting at, Vietnam and the current "War on Terror" are very different.

There are many reasons as to the high death toll. The draft had less to do with it.

Side: It should be by choice

true, we also went in more prepared and have much more support from the people and the police force there, unlike Vietnam.

but the moral of the troops did have much to do with at least the failure of the war. Back in the 60s the troops were under much fire from their very own American people. today we see that in some areas like Portland or San Fransisco, but honor for the American soldier is still pretty high in these days.

and with the draft many people who simply did not want to fight were forced in there.

then there's disease. we have disease in the middle east, but we are more prepared for it.

really, today's military is doing a kick ass job.

No one should be forced to risk their life, regardless of the cause. We have enough people volunteering and signing up for the military, so why should people be forced?

Sure, there might be a war. So what? Recruiting everyone is not going to solve anything. It'll just then put civilian lives at risk--you know, the lives that we are fighting for in the war? Civilians make the country. If anything, criminals and people on death row should be the ones recruited. Then the prisons wouldn't be as packed, and no one would be violating anybody's rights. There ya go, two birds with one stone.

Side: It should be by choice

Everyone should join but they should chose the time they join. In other words, join when there's no war and little chance of war. The military is a great way to grow up. Don't make it a career. Just get what you can out of it and get out.

Here's a picture of me as a lean, mean, messing with your mind machine ;)

There are other ways to acquire what you wrote above. Respect and discipline can be learned simply by having a proper parental role model. It can also be shown through joining in a sports team or general extra curricular activities in the school systems. A third way is through community involvement.

You must also understand that when you join the Military your identity is taken away and you are trained to work as a unit. You are trained to conform to authority. The world doesn't work with everyone conforming. Invention isn't created by conformity. You would have George Orwell's 1984.

You must allow choice.

Personally, I want to join the military. But I am working hard to build muscle and become a fitter person. I don't want everybody in America to join. For all I know, I could end up in a war zone and I do not want my back protected by some wimpy, pacifist, anti-military loser. No offense to anybody of course, just saying that I want my back protected by somebody similar to me, who can carry a gun and who will use it to save my life if necessary. :)

Right on. I read something from a guy that served in the war, and he was saying that one of the only things military men are really focusing on that keeps them alive and fighting overseas, is watching each others back because most of the guys they serve with become their friends. It's like the only thing they really can focus on because it's more about protecting their own people than blowing the enemies brains out. So, ya, it should only people that WANT to serve or else it would be pretty corrupted. Not to mention, ... how the heck would the country afford it if everyone was forced to join the military?

Everyone should go through boot camp. Perhaps it could be a requirement to go to boot camp the summer before your freshman year of High School. That way the discipline and whatnot is instilled in the population. I bet we'd have a lot fewer drop outs, and the people who do join the military will be making an informed decision and therefore less likely to regret their decision.

Anybody that thinks that compulsory service will make people more responsible and will straighten out their characters has no idea what they are talking about.

Greece has mandatory conscription and it has made the lives of thousands upon thousands of men a total misery.

Just imagine.

You go to university and you study for 4 years. During this time you are struggling for money and your family is hoping that soon you will start to contribute, or that you will start your own life and be able to support yourself.

You are now around 25 yrs old and ready to use your degree to get some work.

Then wham! The army comes in and takes you out for 18 months. No payment, no money, nothing.

So you can forget about career prospects because for the next 2 years you are peeling potatoes.

As for the training.... its a joke! All they do is stand guard watching a gate, or peeling potatoes to feed the rest of the soldiers who are equally unhappy about being there in the first place.

All this time you have idiots with higher ranks bullying you because they have the power, and there is nothing you can do about it because the army has its own rules, your ordinary rights as a human no longer apply.

During this time, no one seems to care for the fact that 90% of those soldiers don't want to be there and will never pull that trigger when the time comes.

Then you come out, you are around 27-28 yrs old, have not held a single job yet, have no money of your own, and somehow you are meant to start your life and a family. All this time your parents have been paying for you. And the whole country pays millions if not billions to the army in taxes. And what for?

Why is it that the most powerful armies in the world are those where conscription is voluntary?

And for those that think that it would straighten out unruly teenagers, why does everybody else have to be subjected to this misery for the sake of a small minority of idiots? Since when did the army become "boot-camp" and since when is "boot-camp" mandatory for everyone (well not everyone, just the boys...)?

The United States does not need that amount of soldiers. In addition, it would cost too much money.

We have more than enough people to only have it be done by choice or draft if it is a major war. I understand why Switzerland and Israel does it but we don't need to. I am joining the U.S. Air Force, that is my choice, but i don't think you should be forced into the military when you aren't needed.

Side: It should be by choice

Conscription is a form of force, and when you force unwilling participants, not only is the moral weaken, but the solidarity is weaken as well.

A pure voluntary military is a much better functioning military than a conscripted military.

Voluntary military was spearheaded by the Milton Friedman.
