Facebook Chat: Creepy or Cool?

That's why Gchat and AIM were invented..

When you write on someone's wall everyone can see it so you have to keep your comment in line and not sound like a stalker. Messages to their inbox can be easily ignored. When you get on and some random person that happens to be on your friend list starts talking about creepy things that he shouldn't know about and you can't ignore it cause it pops up on your screen and he KNOWS that it pops up on your screen, THAT'S when you realize this feature is creepy.

I agree, there are other sites that I'd like to use to chat, I don't need that guy that I had one class with 6 years ago chatting me up and asking me why it took so long to approve his friend request.

I see the point of both sides and agree with them. I think there must be blockage system or preferences to use the chat function. I don't want to be available just because I logged in.

totally agree! Although you do have the option of being offline, it would have been nice to have received a notification of this new tool in order to choose to have ir not, and to also be able to add to your list the people you wouldn't mind chatting with...

Useless... I'd rather exchange twitter/im/email with friends then be stuck in some proprietary web chat applet.

If I want to chat with someone online I have them on my Gchat or my AIM buddy list or I will message them via Facebook. I don't want some old "friend" from elementary school chatting me and asking about my life.

It's nothing incredible, but it is useful and not as bad as I think the other side makes it out to be. It's good for a situation where you're just checking facebook quickly and instead of having to leave someone a message on their wall you can simply IM it to them through the chat quickly if they happen to be online. Catching up with people I haven't spoken to in a long time that I don't have on MSN is a good thing as far as I can tell. If you don't wanna talk to them, then don't. The notifications of recent activity that come along with the chat are really handy too.

If you don't want to chat to someone on facebook why add them as a friend at all? They're just as likely to pester you with messages in your inbox or write on your wall as to chat. Those distant contacts who you had a fleeting relationship with won't approach you for a chat for the same reason they don't contact you (or you contact them) because you both acknowledge the relationship as worthless.

This seems like the obvious solution however facebook seems to have a heart and soul all its own. I have had people leave comments that I havnt even added as a friend because I didnt want to deal with it. My boss for example. I can see both sides. Its a great way for people to stay in touch or reconnect but on the other side, well I'm sorry but its just creepy. Facebook is a very ego driven entity that seems to feed off humanbeings insecurities. Maybe its just the people in my network but really, how much do you really need to know about someones day to day actions and thoughts. It's like oh look at me, look at me someone please think I'm important and leave a comment on my wall.

I like it, anyone I dont want to talk to can be easily blocked or not even added in the first place. I think it's one step back towards when people used the phone and met in the flesh. I think Facebook is a good tool to find people but talking at length via it is creepy. Of course I say that while participating in an internet debate so what do I know?
