Fat-Shaming or Health Campaign?

In Britain, Cancer Research is being accused of fat-shaming over its campaign 'obesity is the biggest cause of cancer'. The campaign calls for a ban on junk food advertising and encourages people to eat better diets. So, is Cancer Research fat-shaming? Or is it just calling for health?

You don't see it as often but there are definitely people on the street whom I want to yell "go eat a damn sandwich!" at. In fact they annoy me more. People who are overweight enjoyed something too much. People who look like holocaust victims and are proud of it simply enjoy looking like holocaust victims, and I find that even more offensive. There's thin, and then there's what the F is wrong with you thin.

To the obese the slim will of course be irritating.

Here we have the Progressive Diaper Boy that finds people offensive but only due to their weight. But Diaper Boy i thought you were part of the Party of Compassion ?

Not some much as you so graciously made very clear. You see Boy you are too transparent now and your Communist tendencies were unmasked because like you Progressives have no message now just the Strong Arm Tactics of DickTators

I looked at the link and she says....... Danish-born and UK-based award-winning comedian, Sofie Hagen, 29, strongly condemned the campaign stating that it is “incredibly damaging” and that “society viewing fatness as a negative thing is a thing that kills more than the cancer".........

She’s talking absolute bullshit fatness is a negative thing especially when parents allow their children to become obese , if your child is obese and it’s through over overeating that’s child abuse and should be called so

Oh do grow up you daft, sock-sniffing Nazi. How is it even possible that you recognise and vastly exaggerate racial differences, yet refuse to recognise basic differences in metabolism?

Being fat can have health consequences, sure. I agree with you that it is a negative thing. But, given that it is so closely related to the way individual bodies store and distribute energy, it is significantly closer to a genetic disease than a negative personality trait. It is not, I repeat, not, something you should be blaming the sufferers for. There were 10 year old children in my school who were obese, so it is affecting people who are much too young to simply be eating too much.

The truly pernicious thing here is your own attitude. You don't care about the damage your ignorance and bigotry do to the people you take it out on. That is far more of a negative thing than being fat. In fact, you bring negativity and hate with you wherever you go. You want fat people to take responsibility for their own biology, but you will not even take responsibility for your own behaviour!!

Uh, hun, slow your roll. While I agree that everyone has a different body shape, sometimes it truly is not really a good thing, especially when it is not healthy in and of itself.

While it should not be something one should be ashamed of, people should definitely keep precautions as to their weight. Asking your doctor what your ideal weight should be and be keeping to the proper amount of exercise one should have each week. And while I realize pregnancy and not having enough time are factors, you should also try and keep a healthy diet and/or exercise as much as you can.

And please, do not accuse people of being Nazis.

As the grotesque shapes of the blubber classes wobble along the highways and byways they are, apparently, unaware of how repulsively ugly their misshapen bodies are to look at.

Those dressed in tight fitting clothes can have a comical appearance and, probably unknown to them, are the subject of veilled sniggers and jokes.

They need to be embarrassed into addressing their obesity by recognising that their condition is exclusively the result of their gluttony.

It is gluttony plain and simple except in the rare cases where it’s genetic and it’s worse parents let their children become this way

Many wobblers try to blame their obesity on a range of underlying, blubber producing medical conditions.

This nonsense is dispelled when one considers that there were no fat people in Auschwitz.

Obesity is a simple mathematical equation;- calories in--calories out.

Those with a fast metabolism will burn more calories than those with a slow metabolic rate and can therefore eat more without storing fat.

It's completely unacceptable to inform people of the health risks of certain behaviors. People shouldn't have to worry about the fact that smoking causes cancer and heart disease and anyone trying to spread awareness of these "facts" is clearly just smoke-shaming.

is clearly just smoke-shaming.

😂😂 Very well put Winston , the sad thing is the majority of obese kids are that way because the parents permit it , I believe that to starve a child is child abuse and to stuff a child full of junk is equally so and more and more children are presenting at hospitals with serious health issues all from overeating

At my school there were 42 kids in the class and everyone was thin because we had no access to junk food when I was a kid , in the whole school there were three fat kids and the reason was genetic which is a rarity as the main cause of obesity is overeating especially of junk

It's a real shame and as you say often it's not even the children's fault. I think a big factor is that the junk foods the fat children are fed are completely devoid of any nutrition other than carbohydrates, fats and sugars. This leads them to be constantly hungry despite being obese because the vitamins, minerals, proteins etc. that they need don't come from the junk foods they're being given.

How so? It does have negative side effects, why shouldn't people know about them? Are the common people not allowed to know the consequences of smoking or eating junk food? Ignorance is not something that should be encouraged. And knowing those things can lead to healthier populations.

On another note, why are you on the health campaign side when you have an argument against it?

My post was entirely ironic. I don't blame you for taking it literally since there are actually people stupid enough to believe informing people of the health risks of obesity is "fat-shaming".

Side: Health Campaign

I can believe it's intended as a health campaign, and even if it accidentally offends some people who are overweight that's pretty hard to avoid unless you just ignore that weight is a health problem.

But with that said, people are going to continue to be fat even if you try to lecture them about it. You would have to fundamentally change the way the Western food industry produces and markets food, as well as change your actual culture's approach to food, in order to make the majority of overweight people switch over to thinner people.

Side: Health Campaign

It's nonsense. Being grossly overweight is factually damaging for health. If you let your kids become morbidly obese, you are a bad parent.

Side: Health Campaign

A bad diet leads to bad health. Being obese is a problem. Sometimes you can't change it (e.g if it's a medical condition). But if you spend more time trying to improve your health, the cancer risks to down.
