If hate were so categorically dysfunctional and produced only negative consequences it would have been selected out of our emotional range long ago during our evolution. Hatred can be functional, particularly if one learns to channel and direct it effectively.

Have to disagree with you on that one Jace

I will never believe that hate as described as a sense of loathing, detestation, abhorrence, abomination, execration, resentment, aversion, hostility, can be functional, it would be more likely to produce an adverse reaction rather than positive response.

I believe it is an irrational human frailty to hate and indicates that we have not evolved sufficiently to overcome it.

Most of the time, that person you perceive as being brave is not in spite of the fear, but is actively utilizing the physiological affects of fear as an advantage. It takes some experience with fear (and likely there are genetic factors as well) to keep one's head and avoid panicking. This isn't the removal of fear, this is mitigation of the downside of fear, while keeping a rational mind.
