guys you can hate the US in sports (and in general) all you want but truth is: they are KICK ASS! sorry. they slaughter everyone in everything (except hockey ;)) If you didn't think they'd win the medal count YOU ARE NOT SMART! again... sorry.
It always amazes me when I see the USA at the Olympics. For a relatively unpopulous country (relative to your size), you sure do make the rest of the world look bad when it comes to sport.
I loved the men's basketball team they did great but I expected more out of them. Can't wait for Doc Rivers to coach them next Olympics because he is a great coach.
LOL! Up-vote for you! I know not everyone is American... I've been here for a while but most non-American users are indeed America-bashers... some of the worst are in fact, British (not you... or Ben). I made those the debate choices because I knew there was little chance of any non-American of saying anything positive about Team USA's results.
IMHO the UK's and the Korean results are very impressive.
No, that goes to Bermuda, I believe. Either way, there are many countries which got medals with populations under 2 million (the highest gold medals per capita was about 250K), while GB has 60 million people with 28 medals - over 2 million people per gold medal. We aren't even in the top 10 on gold medals per capita. But yes, we do beat both USA and China.
This is just a reality of sports, though. I used to swim on a small swim team, and through we were all good swimmers and usually won whatever events we could manage to place people in, we couldn't win meets against the big teams because they swam in and placed in more events than we did. Quality is a big determining factor in many sports, but then, so is quantity, and if you lack either you're not likely to win.
...maybe if you had held onto your Empire you would have had the quantity necessary to win.... shame...
Countries like China and USA have a very large population to choose athletes from, hence increasing their chances of success.
Yes, but I don't think this makes their win any less valid. Size and diversity are good things for just about any team, for any sport, and often they play a crucial role in determining the win.
This holes true with my experience in competitive swimming. The cap for swim meets was 300, which for us was never a problem since we never had 300 people on our team to begin with; the biggest team in out league got to pick its top 300 swimmers out of a team of about 500, and they usually kicked our ass. I know if our team was as good as it was but as large as theirs we could have won, but there's no point to being a sore loser about it, because size is part of the sport and that is a aspect our team lacked. So does Great Britain compared to America and China.
It was a great Games and I dont care who won what per capita of population or size of the Country the only reason any country won any medals was because they had the better athletes just look at Jamaica tiny island but they were almost untouchable in the mens Athletics not because they are a great sporting nation but because Usain Bolt is fucking fast, it's the athletes and their trainers that make the teams not the Country.
The thing I thought was interesting was the way some of the Athletes reacted to winning like in the Diving the American Guy that won Gold acted like it was no big deal, the Chinese Guy that won Silver acted like he had'nt even been placed and the British guy who won Bronze acted like he had won Gold. This was something I noticed a lot in the Games the Asian countries had a cery strange reaction to winning like in the Womens Fencing the Girl that won Gold scoring 8 and her reaction instead of celebrating that she won Gold she did not look happy and said in Korea an 8 is'nt good enough, I noticed this with the Archery as well which I think is kinda sad
Umm.. Well considering Great Britain is FFFfffaaaarrr smaller than the entirety of the USofA, i think USA should have got about 112 medals, based on its size, you have the two biggest countries going first, and then 3rd, you have one of the smallest, well done GB, USA I, along with the majority of the world DO hate you, so thanks for putting the haters column you pride and prejudiced bastards!
The two biggest countries in the Olympics didn't go first.... If they had China would be number one and India number two. The US is the third largest country and is far behind China and India in size.
Nope, i go to a regular public school in the south west of England, its quite horrible there, i am in set 2 out of 6 ( 1 being great, 6 being 'special' 2 being above average, i am doing all the compulsory GCSE's, my 4 chosen ones, and an extra 2, and that's about it in school. Not special, you just say that, because you're infuriated that you haven't won an argument with a 14yo public school boy! So no, i'm not special, i have no mental health problemos, if you don't count being neurotic!
You do that! Of course you understand i won't listen! I know how intelligent i am, both knowledge and inter. I've taken thousands of IQ tests and have worked out an average from that.
Lol you guys all get worked up, all i have to do is edit out some exclamation marks and you all get so fussy Jesus i really don't care if USA won it doesn't reflect you as a nation does it?! So suddenly every american is an athlete?! And don't say you don't over react you do, the American high jumper when he failed for not being good enough he attacked the pole!!! Yeah enjoy ur winnings i'm not butthurt about it. And so what if i'm French! Nationalists!
Well of course America is Britains ally. Just you seem so full of you self! And i hate that! Not just America, btu the whole world. I clicked on this expecting to see pictures of eeryons. Sure you won, but this was meant to be about the Olympic medal count, not just goddamn Ameirca. And the fact you put 1 column for america, and a haters column for everyoen else..?! Well..? And you haven't exactly been nice either! What's YOUR problem?! really i didn't start off all swearing and nasty! Besides, im never going to meet you, i can put caps lock on, ill let you in on a secret most of last night i was laughing, and as i said it really doesn't matter we're never going to meet, and you give the impretion you're genuinely bothered about this!!!!!
I've explained once but here goes again. I set the debate up the I did for a couple reasons:
1. To get people fired up, and it succeeded at that. If I had simply said 'Congrats to all the winners out there'.... the debate would have received no traffic.
2. This site is full of non-American America bashers and I knew there would be plenty of hatin' going on so I gave them the appropriate choice.
As for me being 'genuinely bothered'... you don't know me very well.... now do you.
Umm.. No, no i don't! And you don't know me! So before going around accusing me of being nasty, whilst calling people Idiots and 'special' (that one made me chuckle) stop and think about what you're saying, because, really, half of it is bullshit! You wanted it to get fired up you said, and it did. Now you complain i'm being nasty..? isn't that what you wanted?!
Britain is, whether you like it or not Hellno, very small compared to the United States of America. You also said, Hellno, that the UK is about four times smaller than America.
To put that into perspective, what it means is that for them to be equal America would have had to have had 65X4 medals (260). America, however, did not have 260 medals - and therefore, by Hellno's definition we thrashed you to pieces.

First of all... not sure why you keep repeating my name??? That's a little weird. Secondly, whether I like it or not is just a stupid statement... it suggests that I'm pissed off that the UK is small in comparison the the US? WTF? AND I would argue the the UK is a very large nation... 62 million? #22 out of over 200??? That's pretty big.
This whole debate was presented in the way it was because of assholes like you. I have no problem with the UK. They are our greatest ally in my opinion. But you are an America hating asshole who is so deranged that you create multiple accounts claiming to be American just to try to make Americans look stupid... when in fact, it is you who looks like an idiot and if I was British I would be ashamed of you... the same way I'm ashamed of some whacko Americans.
I did not intend to imply that "[you're] pissed off that the UK is small in comparison to the US", I just intended to say that it was. Hellno, you seemed very focussed on the idea that America had won, and by the medal count, they had; however, I am just providing another perspective on the perceived view on the scoreboard. Britain may have the 22nd largest population in the world, but America is the third - it doesn't take a genius to realise that America has a large population by comparison and that the actual medal count is, in some respects, unfair if a single country is to claim the title of 'winner'.
I do not create multiple accounts and I am just attempting to provide another perspective, please don't kill me.

That is a meaningless statement considering winning medals can't be simplified into some linear equation. Britian and USA were not the only countries in the Olympics. If so, it would be a simple linear equation, but there are some 150 or more countries competing.
Comparing size to medal count is really meaningless as well, if anything the medal count is indicative to as how wealth the country is.
"That is a meaningless statement considering winning medals can't be simplified into some linear equation"
It is not meaningless.
By doing the calculations that I did, you can effortlessly reach the conclusion that there isn't just one way to calculate who could have taken the title of winner.
America won on medal count, but relative to their population, they did not.
"Britain and USA were not the only countries in the Olympics. If so, it would be a simple linear equation"
I know they are not the only countries competing.
However just because there are more variables in this situation does not mean that it is impossible to reach any kind of conclusion at all, does it?
We can reach fairer conclusions (in some respects) if we find more ways of evaluating the data we have.
Okay, in my debate I provided a point, evidence, I explained the point and evidence and then I concluded it. The evidence I provided for another perspective is irrefutable because you cannot change the laws of maths.
How does any of that make anybody an idiot? You may dispute it by explaining that it is unfair (which it really isn't), or you may find another ingenious way to dispute it, but calling me an 'asshole' and dismissing Jungleson's argument with "that makes you an idiot too!" is not something that means anything.
60 million of us, and about 350 million of you guys, you should have got far more medals than we did. Always claiming how great you are, you scraped by. Don't say you didn't, because if you really are what you pretentiously say you are, then you WOULD have got more medals!
Oh well i have no idea i haven't bothered to work that out. Beaides they didn't get as many medals as America, because their athletes weren't as good!!
