After all, lies about guaranteed security are far more seductive than lectures about personal responsibility. Our distrust of government isn't baseless cynicism. It's realism. When the Soviet Union fell, optimistic scholars believed the world had shifted inexorably in the direction of free markets and liberal democracy. However, since capitalists didn't want the party to end, they simply put a band-aid on it, took trillions of dollars of taxpayer money, and continued doing exactly the same things which caused capitalism to collapse back in 2008. |
