Harsher Punishments for Hate Crimes

Do you think that there should be harsher punishments for sexual orientation hate crimes? It is known that there is 7 states yet that don't have laws for hate crimes against sexual orientation. I am in favor for harsher punishments for hate crimes against sexual orientation. No one deserves to be treated wrongly because of their choice of lifestyle. Everyone can live their life the way they want to as long as they are happy.

Since hate crimes are on the rise, there is a need for harsher punishments.

I don't think there should be any extra punishment for "hate crimes." I don't think there should even be a term. It is just a crime, the motivation shouldn't play a role. You either broke a law or you didn't.

Side: Against

Absolutely not. It doesn't matter if a person was murdered because the perpetrator dislikes gay people or the particularly ugly tie the victim happened to be wearing. The crime is murder. The life of a gay person when taken away is worth no more or less than the life of anyone else, and the crime of killing such a person is made no worse or no better by taking their sexual orientation into consideration.

Harsher punishments for what was in someone's thoughts is impossible. Only one person knows the real reason and if someone refuses to say why they committed a crime it will be trumped up as a hate crime.

Side: Against

This is as senseless as sending texters or drink drivings to jail. Hate crime will exist besides hate and intolerance in America is not even that bad compared to other countries.
