what way do you see as the way to go? where does the future lie? viewpoint doesn't matter, economical, sustainability, demand, repercussions...

I have to disagree with president Obama's approach, which is to artificially induce pain for consumers in order to create interest in alternate energy sources. IMO that is unnecessary and harmful to all but wealthy people. The Market will find viable alternate energy sources on its own. Why because they want to continue to make money. As the true end of fossil fuels approaches, these energy companies will move to the best alternate. In short "Let the Free Market Function" is the best way forward.

That assumes that when the time finally comes that it is actually profitable to invest in alternative energy, there will remain enough time to develop a sufficient version of it. As of right now, it really isn't profitable to develop alternative energy, especially with the recent dip in oil prices, which means that the incentives to develop new energy sources are few and far between. If the time comes when the price of oil truly starts to skyrocket as the supply severely decreases, and alternative fuels have not been sufficiently research to the point where a new one can be developed soon enough, then we are going to have a serious problem on our hands.

IMO there are several energy companies already working on alternate energy sources. A golden opportunity awaits those who succeed. This is the reason that government should get out of the way and let the market do its thing.

I agree. The market would find a solution to the energy crises more efficiently than any Government-sponsored program.

I'm in agreement with you. What type of new energy source do you think will replace oil though? My guess is nuclear fusion.

In the US, the next big thing will be compressed natural gas and methane gas. Cheap and plentiful are the two main criteria that will determine this choice.

Long range, hydrogen fusion reactors show the greatest promise with virtually limitless supplies of hydrogen in our oceans. Currently magnetic confinement reactors require more energy to operate than they can produce. I believe as you do that eventually this will be our main source of power.

By flooding the market with as much oil as we can to keep prices low for the poor and middle class. This will bide time until technology can produce electric cars that can go thousands of miles before recharging.

Sun, wind and water should be supported a lot more for use during peak hours for electricity generation so that oil, coal, nuclear, could be focused on off peak. This would reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and as we haven't got the science to create safe nuclear fusion on a large scale we need to use our other options more wisely .
