How Many Years Did Your Grandparents Live?

I've noticed that despite we who now live in the more technologically (medically) advanced age and higher standard of living than our grandparents did, they seem to be living longer than one would expect considering they grew up with less privileges and probably poorer and unsanitary conditions.  My theory behind the reason why they live longer is because they actually ate fresh food everyday (either homegrown or bought straight from the farmer's market).

My great grandfather lived to 104.  My grandmother is still alive at 96.  One grandfather is still alive at 88.   What's their secret?
How about your grandparents?  I believe they live longer because in those days they didn't have supermarkets and as much processed foods....they mostly ate fresh from the earth.

All of mine reached 70s to 90s. And hey I'm no fan of the modern food industry and supermarkets but I don't think your theory about why they got that old is right. I think it's because people of past generations generally lived far simpler lives pinned to their homes and families and communities. My own parents, for example, are in their 80s and 90s. They've spent about 50 years in the same house in the same small town doing the same simple routines. It's hard to get hurt, and it's hard for your biological machine to fail, when it fits into a simple rut and never deviates from it. And ironically, many of these very very old still had the curses of Western diseases - heart disease, diabetes, whatever. But then as long as they get treatment and keep to their simple lives they can tack on quite a few more years before they finally are overcome.
