How do you feel about the Nine Noble Virtues of Ancient Scandinavia?

I was reading a debate from somebody on here about the Four Truths of Buddhism, and I was wondering how people felt about the Nine Noble Virtues of Norse?

  1. Courage
  2. Truth
  3. Honour
  4. Fidelity
  5. Discipline
  6. Hospitality
  7. Self Reliance
  8. Industriousness
  9. Perseverance

As a practicing Heathen, I would have to completely agree that adherence to the Nine Noble Virtues creates great men. Especially virtues such as truth, honour, and fidelity which American society doesn't seem to hold dear anymore.

Nine Noble Virtues of Ancient Scandinavia

I'm not familiar with some guideline of noble virtues. I'm probably the only person on this site capable of reading the ancient Nordic texts in the original, yet as far as I know these "virtues" are neopagan, not real pagan. In that I mean that in all of my readings of the original, Old Norse texts, I've never come upon a listing of them in any form.

If Wikipedia can be trusted in this situation, these aren't from Ancient Scandinavia at all, at least not unless you think of Scandinavia in the '70s as having been ancient.

I think that it's absolutely incredible that you can read ancient Nordic texts, and I would love to speak with you at length about the culture of the period. My sources range from Wikipedia to tiny, little, non-profit sites out of Iceland. I'm sure you have a better understanding than 99.99% of people in the world on this subject, but I believe these virtues are a fairly accurate reminder of what the original virtues were.

I'm afraid I don't read very much in Old Norse anymore, and I've felt lately that my skill with what is arguably the most beautiful language to have ever been spoken has diminished; when it comes to the mythology I'm not very well versed simply because most of it was written in verse, rather than prose, which even most people far stronger in the language than me find hard to read.

Sounds good, but where does integrity come in? Or did they not have a word for that back then?

I am not sure of their origin, but I think they are a good list to try to strive for. Could be difficult though.
