How to gain immortality? (If there is)

I made a debate called "Is there any such thing as immortality?"

a few said there was such a thing.

So, how do we gain immortality?

Add New Argument

There is only one way to gain immortality. You have to obtain in excess of 20,000 points on CD ;)

.................Yay!!! Then i have a long way to go.

Good luck. Hope to see you on the other side ;)

Please do not ask me. I am just curious about how to gain it

Apparently, if you die with the blood of a vampire in your veins, you come back as a vampire, i.e. "undead". That's the little bit that I've gathered from watching "Vampire Diaries". It's kind of crappy show, but every now and then Paul Wesley takes his shirt off.

You cannot gain eternal life; it must be given unto you. If you put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone, you will inherit eternal life.

Hear hear, the idea of humanity obtaining eternal life is preposterious. It would only fuel the selfishness in people and cause more problems than it solves.

WHAT.

You agree with the only kook crazy enough to actually say that eternal life was possible.

You think that YOUR religion doesn't FUEL the SELFISHNESS and FEAR in people that want immortality in paradise?

You think me, an atheist seeks immortality? Perhaps an extended life, but never the sort of "after-death" immortality.

No one is more desperate for immortality than religious people. Hindus have reincarnation, and YOU have your heaven.

You are the one who is selfish and insane for thinking your god will grant immortality on you for being in his cult.

I do not know about this immortals. I've only seen them in shows

It isn't something you gain, it is more so the abandonment of morality.

Well, i like that you put (If there is) as i can now inform you that, no there isn't! And in any case, would you want it. You might think now tat you're enjoying life and that you never want it to end, but in 50, 60, 90 years time, you'll be tired, times would have changed, you can't keep up, your friends and family are dying, you can't be bothered anymore. I wouldn't want to live forever...

I believe the end of the evolution will result in us becoming perfect.

But then, once we are perfect, our minds and bodies beyond what they are now, we will then be able to see problems that we were not able to see before. Thus the cycle will continue again, except on a higher proportion, into infinity.

There will always be room to improve. That is what I think at least.

Though, at our stage of life, we do in fact have a limit to how we can perceive things. Thus, in relation to the limit of our perception, I do think 'immortality' can be acquired. Of course, once we obtain it, we will then have the perception to find more problems, but again, in relation to how we are now, yes, I think we can gain immortality.

How?

Technology.

There is a theory known as the technological singularity. It is the theory that, because our rate of technological complexity is increasing at an exponential rate, we will eventually create an artificial intelligence that is greater-then-human. Then, once we have created such an intelligence, it will then help us create an AI smarter then itself. Then another. Then another. Etc.

In my personal belief, I believe compassion, love, and unity are actually evolutionary adaptations to benefit our species. Therefore, I believe a greater-then-human intelligence would be utterly benevolent and all-compassionate. Since this is so, I postulate that if the technological singularity were to be a theory that proves true, then the greater then human AI's we create will lead us into technological advancements that effectively make us ageless, and our society utopian.

So how would we gain immortality?

By evolution.

Science and technology of the future, in the future. It sure is possible but not with our current knowledge. But I don't know about surviving the end of the universe, still, even that might be possible.

No, this isn't quite true.

Now, with our current technology, it is impossible, but if an effort was made, within 5 years, using current technology, we could likely do it. This would take insane amounts of funding and dedication and the most gifted minds, but yes, there is some pretty advanced technology that exists even today which could be used to make on immortal for 500+ years.

That is immortal enough for me, at least. I don't think any human would desire to live that long. I mean, right now most people are under age 40 on this site, but if you get to age 80, you feel old. Get to 140 and woah, that's a lot. 350 and you're probably tired of it, and at 500, I would probably be ready to be done. A lot of learning and thinking can occur, and watching societies and nations rise and fall, new technology, colonization of Mars in that amount of time... That would be a lot to take in, along with all the ups and downs of life.

It would just get boring after 500 years.

I'm sure 600 would be possible though, if one really wished for such a curse.

Would it still get boring if you were a scientist? Always something new to do, something new to find out.

I would like being immortal very much. Could see where humanity goes. Could visit every place on Earth, eventually even other planets and solar systems. All the knowledge I could gain.

I bet the reason why people feel old when 80 is because they really are old, they are all crumpled up and their bodies are slowly dying. If you were always in good shape (lots of time for exercising) and looking between 25-35 or so you'd perhaps feel "old" through experience and knowledge or rather feel like "nothing new", but not the real old. I wonder, how long would autobiography be...

Getting old physically and dying is part of our current lives, if that part were to be removed then the accompanying feelings would also be removed, most likely.

Nothing would be a lot to take in 'cause you wouldn't take it all at once, your path there would be "softened" by seeing how it developed so far. Ups and downs, the point is to accept what has already happened and move on, not dwell over the past that can never be changed. Good memories are good memories, the more you have the better for you. If you slept for hundreds of years and then were waken up then there'd be a lot to take in.

There are so many occupations, more than enough to occupy you for 500 years. A writer, any kind of artist, an actor, an engineer, and athlete, a scientist, a doctor, a miner, a carpenter, etc., anyone.

Killing oneself at any time would be easy, until then why not keep on going, if it were possible?
