How to stop the non-English spam debates?!

Fellow CreateDebate-ers, I come to you in a time of great peril. All around us, non-English spam debates are springing up from multiple accounts, clogging our feeds with repeated debate topics.

What should we do? How can we stop these tyrants before they ruin the site?

"Dear Hhioh,

I suspect it is a school in Croatia using the site for their students. I am in the process of trying to contact them to see if I can get them to create their own community. Please be patient as I do not turn anybody away from the site unless they are breaking a rule.

Thanks,

Andy"

I can't fucking read captcha, and I swear I'm not a robot. I need to refresh like 10 times before I get it right. Is there some way to make captcha not look like fluorescent diarrhea?

Out of curiosity, what's the point of that spam? I find it very confusing. Like, it takes time and effort to do, what's the payoff?

With hopes of expanding the site to other languages, would it be prudent to create another tag, selecting the language? There may come a time when you'll only be able to understand half the debates going on, and a language filter would make things a lot easier.

This doesn't solve the spam, but I thought here would be the best place to bring it up.

First, I would like to say thanks for your support. Yes, there have been a number of languages that have recently started to take over the home page and this is not spam. I would like to share my position on these and then encourage some more discussion:

1. CreateDebate receives 50%+ of its traffic from global locations (over 190 countries) during any 30 day period.

2. Most people who come ot the site read and post in English

3. Recently more global schools have been using the site, but for the most part have written in English (the site is a favorite for educators teaching English as a second language)

4. We get very few real spam debates, and those are often reported very early and not "bot" created, so it would be futile to add captcha to the debate posting process (plus, it would drive everyone crazy).

5. Something will need to be done to allow filtering on language...I like the suggestion of a tag or selector when creating a debate.

There are other modifications I would like to see in place from a priority persepective, but I will get it on the list of enhancements.

Please be patient as those debates will fall away quickly.

Best regards,

Andy

Ok, I see what happened...This is definitely an educator. You can she She/he had their students each create a debate. If they had created their own community, this would not have clogged our main channels. I don't mind the debates that have activity, but the ones that were created "just to create a debate" would have been better done in separate community.

I have reached out to them to see what I can do to move them over.

Thanks,

Andy

I don't know we could ask the creator to stop making to many debates. I agree I am tired of those non english debates all over and there is rarely I could find an english debate

Agreed! Though I am all for expanding CreateDebate to an international audience, they are just spam, the same debates from the different people!!

Does anybody actually know how to contact the creator? It really does dampen the feeling of the site.

Maybe captcha-related solutions? ----------------------------------

I doubt anyone would mind a captcha just for creating debate, but could mean they move to the comments, which could mean more captcha, and so on. The creator could just block the IP address, as long as they're not using a dynamic IP, would be the easiest way.

Most people would hate captcha for creating debates. Besides, the foreign spammers most often use people to create the spam so captcha would be useless. Also, I would like to point out that I am not against foreign language debates, as long as they are not spam! It's funny how you can tell it's spam oven though they are in Russian or some other language :D
