How would you react if...?

Little hypothetical here. Assuming it was actually knowable, how would you react if it turned out your religious beliefs, or lack of, turned out to be false. I'll split into two sides.

Atheists: Let's say Jesus comes down to Earth or something, and tells you that Christianity is the true religion. How do you react?

Theists: Let's say that Stephen Hawking upgrades his wheelchair software, and somehow disproves the existence of God. How do you react?

I'd be satisfied that there was proof, if I could I'd ask him some questions about logic, and why he invented it only to make himself look illogical.

I'd be a bit relieved knowing there was an afterlife. I'd ask Jesus what I have to do to make up for my "sins" and then hopefully be able to comply.

Cause if Dante's Inferno is right, Hell is a terrible fuckin' place.

I would speak to Jesus and God, and point out all the contradictions that threaten his place as "omnibenevolent, omnipotent, omnipresent, omnitool, ect" and after I have finished talking, and after Jesus/God has stopped blocking their ears saying "Lalalalala," they would of disappeared in a puff of logic.

But, say if there was an illogical universe where somehow, the christian god snuck in through all the cracks, I would believe in them- first checking if I was high of course.

Ask him why the fuck he screwed over all the kids in Africa, call him a cunt, then ask for forgiveness and live forever in heaven.

Well, you know what they say about that... "He works in mysterious ways"... in other words, he's either just an asshole or he enjoys fucking around with people...

That's what you call a TROOLLL ;)

Side: Atheist reaction

I'd ask him why he wants anything to do with a religion that spent the last 2000 years slandering his message, degrading his image, and selling out his name. I'd ask for an apology for all the death and lies. I'd ask the fraudulent bastard why the hell we don't seem to have the knowledge of good and evil despite having paid the price, and i would demand to be reinstated into the Garden of Eden. Then I'd probably give him and the big man upstairs the finger.

Provided i can get that all in before the trap door opens.

I'd have an "Oh Shit, I'm Screwed!" moment for sure! Then? I don't know? Hope for the best... if he's going to judge me for not believing when he supplied no real evidence then there's nothing I can do... I guess I'd try to make a deal with the other side.

Though I'm not an atheist, this side fits more. Because I'm certainly an atheist towards the Christian God.

But if he chose to come down and prove us wrong, I'd be content with knowing. I hate the unknown, I really do, and so even if I go to hell for my life of "sin", I'd be at least content in that aspect.

And I'd like to have a conversation with God if possible.

It wouldn't actually be an issue for me. I'd try my best to live in accordance with the facts as I'll have seen them, but not before asking myself whether this is a mass hallucination and having adequate evidence to the contrary.

I would love to be proven wrong. The idea of life after death and going to some magical place in the sky is very appealing. Unrealistic, but appealing. I'm not athiest because I want to be, I whole heartidly believe in what seems to be the most realistic way of how we came to be, and what happens when we die. Nothing. Anything otherwise seems fairy tale to me, and it basically is.

Atheism isn't all about rejection the existence of God(s). It i also about disliking it. Even if Jesus did come down, i would take another good look at the Bible, and decide "nope, look at what your religion has done, it has lead to so many wars and suffering, i don't want any art in it." and would pay the price for going to hell. If, however, he could prove to me what a world without religion would be, and how worse it would be, then yes i would accept humanity is just like that, and in fact Christianity has made things better, thus i would convert. But, ladies and gentleman, this is very unlikely to happen. For the time being, i am an open minded atheist!

Christians haven't been hindered by logic for the past 2000 years. Why would this be any different?

Christianity is not the opposite of logic, your statement just goes to show how close minded atheists can be.

I like how you assumed I was an atheist.

Christians haven't been hindered by logic for the past 2000 years.

Logic is the wrong word. If the Christians are wrong and the atheists are right... everybody dies and goes to the same place forever. If the Atheists are wrong and the Christians are right... atheists go to a very unpleasant place upon death for eternity. Which choice sounds logical to you?

Why would this be any different?

The thing about faith is that it often exists outside the realm of knowable fact. However, I do know most Christians live by the idea of 'trust but verify'. If there was some way to absolutely prove it wrong... the vast majority would turn away.

Pascal's Wager, we meet again. The key problem with the Wager is the amount of other religions. There's Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Shintoism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Sikhism, Cao Dai, Tenrikyo and Wicca being practiced today. There are also thousands of folk religions in Africa. Then there are all the gods that have ceased to be worshiped. Greek mythology, Roman mythology, Norse mythology, Meso-American mythology. There could even be a god that has chosen not to reveal himself, so he can throw everyone in hell for not worshiping him. Your one in two shot becomes a one in infinity shot.

The atheist then, puts money on no horse. We live a life without having to worry about worship or the afterlife, and can continue freely. Therefore, the atheist makes the better choice.

It's fun believing in Christianity anyway.

But on a more serious note nearly every country with strong foundations in religion (e.g Vatican City) would fall into instant chaos. (Though I reckon the Pope will just have Hawking shot).

Though I remeber hearing that somewhere in Egypt they've discovered an ancient library, but don't want to progress in fear that the knowledge may compromise their religion.

Side: Theist reaction

to be honest, im notsure how i'd deal with it. i dont see a way he could prove without any doubt but if there was no way there could possibly be a god, guess we'd just have to accept it.

very interesting idea

but im christian and proud with no intentions of changing

Someone could disprove him. After all, there are 5.8 billion theists and only one Stephen Hawking.
