Why do you think global companies like AT&T;and Vodafone are sniffing around India and buying companies like Hutch?

AirTel, Hutch, Tata Indicom and Reliance have all tailored cell phone solutions for the Indian masses, poor and rich in extremely innovative ways and have penetrated even very rural markets with rs 1000 handsets and Prepaid options that make sense for people in India and China!

Believe me, Indian Cell phone companies are 100 times more innovative than anything you can find elsewhere in the developed world!

Every major consumer product like soap, shampoo, pickles, etc have all been "pouched" and sold for Rs.1 in every rural market, even as we speak! And they are buying in droves! In 2006 Business India did a Consumer profiling study and found that the people who earn the least, the people they call "Nirdhaan" had enough money to buy shampoo in pouches and were buying them!

It all depends upon having a positive attitude and looking what innovation represents "Value" (balance between cost and benefits) and provide it in that form.

That applies to software also! The Indian population can be an immense advantage if you can think of Value and deliver it in a way that is customized and delivered in India that makes sense!

But on the plus side there are more minds, more people to come together and create something great, or uncover great knowledge. Technologically we are being pushed into the future faster, maybe even held back. We are moving into a new era, our generations the the generations after that will be expanding. This is not our permanent home ( maybe not our generation ) more people more progress.

Side: An Asset

More people to look after. If anything happens it's more of a headache to deal with more people.

Imagine all the diseases one day, there wont be shots forever that will be able to fend them off. They'll just keep coming back stronger and stronger . I'm sure this works both ways though.

but bigger population more hosts more hysteria.

eh, and what about the people that YOU are a liability to?

to someone else all your life is another dollar or slave.

And also more soldiers on the front lines defending countries which is just not necessary.

In the oddest sense. We shall assume (truthfully) that the masses are idiots. This makes it slightly easier for people in positions of power to manipulate the population into agreeing to idiotic ideas. This makes us a liability to the rest of the world...

It is an asset in terms of military might, but in terms of taking care of the people it is a logistics nightmare. Making sure all of your people get food, water, education is exponentially more difficult the more people you have. The more people you have the thinner your nation's wealth must be spread. Managing natural resources becomes a high priority. This is why over-population can be a huge problem.
