I can't vote therefore I don't care.

A problem with todays teenagers is that they seem to live by this philosophy. In fact at my high school in particular only a select group of students even show the slightest interest in politics, and out of that group only a few are able to see through all the propaganda. Isn't this a big problem? How can we fix this?

You're right, and I have no idea how to fix it.

You're one of the handfull of teens I've met (well online, whatever) with two braincells to rub together.

I blame rap music for this ._.

How can you just say rap music? Hell didn't Jimmy Hendrix make an album called Purple Haze? There's rock, Bob Marley has a song called Smoked 3 Joints and about every other song in reggae mentions something about reef, who the hell knows whats going on in scream-o. The point being its not just rap music and a lot of rap music isn't even like that. There is always one song on a rap album that is a memoir to their family and their dead homies. Hell Kanye West's new album is just over heartbreak not gang bangin'.

Heh. Thanks for that.

And I agree. Rap music could be a very big cause of this. I mean, all they say in rap music is do drugs, get laid, and have fun. No one ever talks about the issues in a way to intrigue the teenage (race) and it is quite a shame.

Altarion, I think he was joking when he said he blamed rap music (I hope). The commonplace tendency to knock it stems from veiled racism, whether you know it or not. Just as many rappers are political as any other type of musician. You don't know this because you're not as exposed to that culture as to your own, and all people tend towards appreciating the negatives of people different from them.

"Rap music could be a very big cause of this. I mean, all they say in rap music is do drugs, get laid, and have fun."

What genre of popular music isn't like this? What part of popular culture itself isn't like this? The problem isn't any segment of our culture, but the culture itself. Personally, I blame Rampant Capitalism. Civic apathy keeps us safely within the status quo, buying iPods and not asking who we exploited to make them.

I think the real problem is this:

"I don't know therefore I don't care therefore I wont vote, even though I can"

Side: Agree

I really think it has a lot to do with the education system and parenting in general. The education system in the united states is a joke. I've been involved in it and so have almost half of my friends. (on the teaching side) It's so political it's more about pleasing and less about inspiring the youth, in general, and to formulating their own interpretations. (here, read the book and do this quiz: and by the way the book is something I choose because I'm not getting paid enough to do this job/they'll most likely fire me, if i don't, before I'm tenured...Or I'm tenured and the chances they'll fire me is limited so I can be lazy or burnt out) The education system needs an entire reformation. The parenting has a lot to do with this as well. Parent's work more hours and the number of dual parent working families has been increasing exponentially. Don't forget to add the number of single parent/divorces families. It is more common now for a young teen to be raised by their environment than by their parents and what do you think this leads to?

To solve this problem a reformation of the education system is a must. The creation of jobs that do not create a high demand of hours away from home is also a must.

I agree with this. I think the education system we have is going down the tube. This topic could be a debate of its own.

"It is more common now for a young teen to be raised by their environment than by their parents and what do you think this leads to?"

Good point, I think that can be very dangerous.

You can't believe the stuff you've written here yourself Jake! The only things that are believable are that Bush & Palin have several screws loose and that war is NOT cool...it's a despicable way of trying to resolve things at a cost of hundreds of thousands of lives.

Obama went after the YouTube group or ones like it? Surely you jest. The first song to come out of YouTube, I believe, was "Yes We Can" by Will.i.am collaged with Obama and others. That became an anthem of sorts and was very highly thought of. This is the only time in history I can think of that so many young people finally got involved and turned this entire machine around. Brain washed by the media? The media brain washes both ways my friend. Do you really think that young people cannot think for themselves if they are interested in politics? What makes me sick is the number of adults who are still clueless when it comes to politics, although we've had some improvement in this election. People are involved in this...all people, young and old and it's about time!

On behalf of all the teenagers whose views are liberal, thank you for both stereotyping and belittling us! We all appreciate it.

I am prepared to debate you on any of the topics you just mentioned. I have good reasons for all of my views...which is funny considering some of the arguments I've seen you post (marijuana should be illegal because it is illegal).

The majority of Conservatives end up like they are because they are brainwashed by the media. They have almost no knowledge of politics yet most of them love Bush and are for the war, and they don't even freaking know why. Well, it's because they are taught that Bush is defending the Christian and American ways of life, that its cool to put "patriotic" bumper stickers on your car, and that Sarah Palin is anything but a corrupt misogynistic idiot.

You know what's interesting? A lot of these Conservatives hate Obama. That's because the opposition went after this group using Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, FreeRepublic.com, and it just makes me sick.

I've been into politics since 7th grade. Well, technically since 2000 in Elementary school, i just didn't know what i was talking about. I was a Green back then (looking back at my views).

I guess, watching CNN all those times did fuck me up in a way, but it also helped form me. Now, all the kids who didn't know shit (often said shit about Bush with stuff that sounded made up) were liberal. My views made a radical shift in 7th grade (becoming a Republican) and then as a freshman in High School (Libertarian) and as a Sophomore and up till now, i've just thought independently. My views have been the same in a broad perspective, and i've only thought more and more logically since then.

Now, in Middle and High School, most people were Liberal... i guess the Liberal perspective is popular among the young people, hell, I'm considered a Liberal by Conservatives... But they were the type of Liberals who decided that it was all Bush's fault and that the Iraq war was for oil... hell, some actually fell for that "Loose Change" crap. I often got into debates (and actually made them go "shit"), but converting them hasn't been so easy. Yes, some of them realize that i'm right and they say "maybe Bush isn't the Devil", but teens can be such morons sometimes. How come people are still blaming Bush for the economy crisis when the Democrats were in charge of the House and Senate during the collapse? the economy was great before they took over, and unemployment was at an all time low... what happened? and they blame Bush saying "he fucked up our economy". I try to explain things to them, but they don't know shit... they don't know any of the people in charge like Barney Frank or Nancy Pelosi. The only person they know is Bush and maybe Cheney.

If you hate Bush, that's fine. What i hate is when people make these extreme views and they don't know shit on what they're talking about.

I care because I know that eventually me and my friends will need to fix any problems that are caused by elected politicians and their policies. I do not want all those problems in the future, so I do care.

So, until I can vote, I try to influence those who can. :)

Side: Disagree

This isn't a phenomenon exclusive to young people. Even among voting adults, most are completely ignorant of politics and are not politically active in any way other than voting.

Which is exactly why we have such shitty choices every year, and no truly open and honest public discourse about issues...people just aren't interested enough.

And in my opinion, that's a good thing.

Government, being the violent monopoly that it is, is an inherently abusive entity. The fact that most people don't have much interest in controlling the lives of others is encouraging. The downside of this is most people pay little attention to what their government is doing until it becomes overly intrusive on a personal level, or problems the public expects government to correct are rampantly neglected.

Supporting Evidence: indifferent voters (www.fff.org)
Side: Disagree

I disagree because with this, it is not only the vote that counts towards the winning of a president, for example. The vote is only the direct means of which we choose the president, but people who are unable to vote can still have influence over other people who are eligible to vote, particularly those who are undecided.

Side: Disagree

That's foolish. Don't you care where your country is headed?

Side: Disagree

I am very interested in politics and I enjoy reading the latest policies and manifesto's.

I think voting should be made available to 16 year olds and above. In the UK at least because when you reach 16 in UK you are leagally alowed to have sex, get married, leave home, get taxed and smoke. So we get taxed by the government but don't get a say in what goes on?

I say its our future they are adjusting and we should have a say in who prepares our future.

I can see why we wouldn't be allowed to vote because only 31% of your people in 2007 felt they had a duty to vote and only 59% of young people in 2007 did vote. Unfortunately the 2008 figures are not yet available but I would vote and those who don't vote shouldn't complain about the government and the law.
