If Homosexuality Were a Choice, Would Not Many Homosexuals Choose to be Heterosexuals?

If Homosexuality Were a Choice, Would Not Many Homosexuals Choose to be Heterosexuals?

The social stigma of homosexuality is great; homosexuals face potential persecution,  ostracism by their families, and general dislike by a great many people. Were homosexuality a choice, why would so many people choose it?

I agree with that logic. Why anyone would willingly, freely choose to be condemned to a life of persecution, abuse and intolerance? I'm sure that there would be some who would perhaps experiment with homosexuality, but not be open and dedicated to it.

Although, with a friend like Christopher Hitchens, the bigots mayn't pose that much of a threat.

This is the most obvious argument against people who think that it is a choice, yet I've never seen anybody argue it.

Yes! I've said this before, though I'm not sure if it was on here or elsewhere. Anyway, WHO would choose to lose friends, and family? And possibly get attacked for a choice? And not have the chance to birth your own children (though that may be a personal thing because I want to be a mother so much)

The point is, WHY would anyone choose it?

In today's society, most definitely.

Often times, the only real problems with being gay is the cultural stigmas that react towards homosexuality.

However, before I had discovered my bisexuality (result of drug use, but still), I would have chosen to be bi if I had a chance. It just seemed like the most rational sexual lifestyle.

OK, all kidding aside, if we make a blanket statement that they do not chose to be homosexuals then the slippery slope I fear is that some nut is going to claim that he can cure homosexuality through genetic engineering. I don't know what's worse. The current state or a situation where people are actively seeking to rid the world of homosexuals. No joke..., no smiley.

O_O Oh... My... God... Joe just made a serious debate. And I agree with... part of it.

People already claim that they can "cure" homosexuality. The question is, what would be worse?

Curing a mental disorder that's not there?

Or possibly performing surgery to fix something that can't be changed?

Obviously I'm throwing my views in there hard core.

But my point still stands.

Is the mental torture worse than whatever physical nonsense people would be put through?

Just because it's not a choice doesn't necessitate that it's a genetic thing, personality's claimed to be both genetics and life, and there aren't widespread attempts at curing the 'mean gene', as far as I'm aware.

Out of interest, why the sudden seriousness today? You've seemed equally your jaded self, and an intelligent debater with insight. Not any worse, just different.

Side: Yes

Not necessarily. I think that many homosexuals actually prefer a good pounding. ;)

Side: No

There are many liberals, for example, that come to this site and they are shown the errors of their ways and yet..., they chose to be liberals ;)

Now, some studies have shown that Homosexuality can be genetic. Hell, most human impulses can be genetic. And some people I know would choose to be heterosexual, but I believe that most of them, given the choice, would stay the way they are. Out of pride for who they are, and depending if they were in love or not with someone.

Side: No

99.9% of homosexuals are happy just the way they were born to be. They would not choose to become heterosexuals.
