If there weren't any religions, would there have been less wars in history?

Religion, and particularly Christinaity, has been quite infamous in the past for the cause of wars and/or the reason behind why they happened.

So i put it to you, had there been no religions in existence would the world have had less wars?

Now im strickly talking about religion here not God(s). So that means people had there own belifes whether they be atheists or theists or somewhere inbetween.

I appreciate every response to this and hope you find this question to your taste.

Side: There would have been less.

There have been plenty of wars about religion that would not have occurred otherwise.

Side: There would have been less.

Well, there wouldn't be a war on terror, but that's Islam's fault not Christianity.

Side: There would have been less.

Many wars have been the fault of Christianity.

Many wars have been fought over many things. Its truly the fault of the people. They choowe to perfom the action. The religion does not. The person chooses to obey a set of words. The words do not force anything upon anyone.

Side: Not much would have changed.

Quite a number of wars were over Religion. When a group of people think their Religion is superior - watch out!

If there weren't any religions then not much would really change. People would fight over something else to go to war for.

Pretty much, many religious wars are just people using religion to get other people to help them fight.

When people get rid of their imaginary constructs of belief, there is little left to fight about.

800 years of dark age in Europe... banned pretty much anything that would any local priest found as a heresy which includes pretty much anything that is more complicated that a stick or includes any chemistry... or just mentioning that Earth isn't flat and/or centre of the universe...

I don't think so. I think the wars would have started regardless, religion just acted as a scapegoat. If it wasn't because I'm a Christian and you're a Jew it'd be because I'm white and you're black, basically.

Not all problems are caused by religion, but religion amplifies the problem. True that animosity towards one another may be from natural tribal mentality, but to believe that you have a divine power on your side that gives you superiority makes it a whole lot worse. Look at the issue over the Israel-Palestine issue. For years secular powers have attempted to help create a simple two state solution, but due to religion, you have the Jews on one side who believe that they were ordained by God to live their as well as the Muslims as well.

All you stated was that the wars were worse or longer because the people thought they had a supernatural entity on their side, you have not stated how their would have been less wars without religion.

Side: Not much would have changed.

The reasons for war are greed, pride and fear. Religion is nothing more than a propaganda. In the end, it is still politics that will write history

Side: Not much would have changed.

Humanity will continue to rip itself apart and kill it's own kind with or without religion.
