In 1968, as a staunch supporter of the war, I attended a peace march down Wilshire Blvd, in LA. I wore my uniform and stood on the sidelines heckling the marchers.. Then, the cops attacked. Did wearing my uniform make any difference to the fucking cops? Nahh.. They beat the shit outta me too.. Also, in 1968 I got loaded for the first time.. It gave me a different perspective, that has never left me.. 1968 was a very good year. So, there I was, stoned outta my gourd watching the Paris Peace Talks unfold. They were having a terrible time discussing what the SHAPE of the table should be.. And, I thought, the shape of the table is very important. Then Walter Cronkite reported the casualties for the day.. So, I'm watching the motherfuckers arguing about the SHAPE of the table while 100's of my brothers in arms were killed.. All of a sudden, I GOT it. They were talking about the fucking shape of the fucking table, while my shipmates died. The Americans retreated from Vietnam, which shortly afterwards became a fully unified Communist state, and it had no effect whatsoever on the safety of your country. Well, I guess anyone involved in modern warfare, which, from WW2 onwards was classified as TOTAL WAR, could be described as baby killers. The indiscriminate bombing of most of Western European cities by Germany's Luftwaffe, including those in Poland, Belgium, France and the U.K. led to such devastating reprisals as Britain's 1000 bomber raids on German cities such as Cologne. Of course there is no direct correlation between the Vietnam war which was raged in an attempt to stem the apparently inexorable march of communism in Asia, and the strategies used by the allies to redress Germany's conquest and subjugation of most of Western Europe. How many babies were killed in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima or Nagasaki? TOTAL WARFARE PLACES CIVILIANS, including babies, the infirm and all non-combatants in the frontline. No room for feigned emotional sentimentality when it comes to war. The only important factor is winning and recognizing that the end will justify the means. Ask no quarter, give no quarter.
