CreateDebate is a social debate community built around ideas, discussion and democracy.
If this is your first time checking out a debate, here are some quick tips to help get you started:
Arguments with the highest score are displayed first.
Argument replies (both in favor and in opposition) are displayed below the original argument.
To follow along, you may find it helpful to show and hide the replies displayed below each argument.
To vote for an argument, use these icons:
You have the power to cast exactly one vote (either up or down) for each argument.
Once you vote, the icon will become grayed out and the argument's score will change.
Yes, you can change your vote.
Debate scores, side scores and tag scores are automatically calculated by an algorithm that primarily takes argument scores into account.
All scores are updated in real-time.

When you are ready to voice your opinion, use the Add Argument button to create an argument.
If you would like to address an existing argument, use the Support and Dispute link within that argument to create a new reply.
I wish you'd stop using the wrong words. You are talking about cultural assimilation, which is an academic use of the word. It doesn't mean the same thing as in everyday language.
The problem with people like you who Google/thesaurus/link drop everything to try to create the impression you are smarter than you are, is that almost exclusively none of you are capable of interpreting what you read.
You seem to prefer broadcasting your lack of vocabulary
You seem to read the opposite of what people actually type. I just explained to you that you are using a word in the context of a phrase coined by an academic which is detached from its ordinary use. I can even give you the exact name of the academic who first used the word in the context of integrating one culture into another if you'd like. But let's face it, you are never going to listen to anybody else are you? Because you are always right. Oh what fun it must be to live in your world. I bet you don't have many friends, do you?
it is exactly the right word
I find it ironic that you can find words used in academic literature, yet can't seem to grasp that simply denying your own mistakes is not how academics react to legitimate criticism.
Your claim is seriously that people can't use a word if its etymology involves smart people??
Obviously that isn't my claim you intellectually dishonest fuckwit. That's what you are misrepresenting my claim to be because you refuse to ever admit you are wrong.
The word is used all the time
And here we go with another random bunch of link drops, as per usual pretending that they disprove what I just explained to your stupid ass. Let's go through them, shall we? You boring little moron.
This link is to the World Economic Forum, and the only place the word "assimilate" is mentioned is the title, proving that you are simply using Google searches to find clickbait titles without actually reading any of them.
This link asks whether America can assimilate, so it is using the traditional definition of assimilate, not the one you used to describe the integration of other cultures into a host culture.
This is another link to a university. Did you not wonder to yourself while you were doing this pointless Google search why so many universities were popping up? Connecting dots was never your strong point, was it?
If you'd bothered to read the title you'd have noticed the NYT has put the word "assimilate" in quotation marks, implying exactly what I have just had to explain to your stupid ass twice.
I can't be arsed with the last two. Fuck off you idiot. You're stupid.
The content is not from an academic at a university (though that shouldn't actually matter), it is quoting Teddy Roosevelt from over 100 years ago.
"the only place the word "assimilate" is mentioned is the title"
It uses "assimilation" 9 times in the text.
"whether America can assimilate"
It uses it both ways ("assimilation has never been easy for immigrants or Americans already here.") and both are perfectly fine.
"another link to a university"
Again, somehow smart people using the word means it can't be used on a debate site??
"the word 'assimilate' in quotation marks"
because the definition is the point of the story - reading more than the title we find:
"What does assimilation mean these days? The word has its roots in the Latin ‘‘simulare,’’ meaning to make similar. Immigrants are expected, over an undefined period, to become like other Americans, a process metaphorically described as a melting pot. But what this means, in practice, remains unsettled."
"For some, assimilation is based on pragmatic considerations, like achieving some fluency in the dominant language, some educational or economic success, some familiarity with the country’s history and culture."
"For yet others, the whole idea of assimilation is wrongheaded, and integration — a dynamic process that retains the connotation of individuality — is seen as the better model."
"In 1890, this newspaper ran an article explaining that while ‘‘the red and black assimilate’’ in New York, ‘‘not so the Chinaman.’’"
"By contrast, Donald Trump warned on the campaign trail that ‘‘not everyone who seeks to join our country will be able to successfully assimilate.’’"
"Immigrants contribute to America in a million different ways, from growing the food on our tables to creating the technologies we use every day. They commit far fewer crimes than native-born citizens. But hardly a week goes by when poor assimilation isn’t blamed for offenses involving immigrants"
"Both incidents were immediately seized upon by the far right as examples of the inability — or refusal — of Muslims to assimilate."
"The white nationalist Richard Spencer told a reporter that he once bonded with Stephen Miller, now a senior White House adviser, over concerns that immigrants from non-European countries were not assimilating."
"I can't be arsed with the last two."
Because of cognitive dissonance perhaps??
"At the turn of the century a wave of “new immigrants” — Poles, Italians, Russian Jews — were believed to be too different ever to assimilate into American life."
"Immigrants to our shores today are following closely in the path of their predecessors, assimilating rapidly just like they did in the past"
"The illusion of nonassimilation is created by looking only at newcomers who have not had time yet to assimilate"
"our nation’s latest immigrants are following in the footsteps of our ancestors, spreading out across the country to assimilate in communities large and small"
"The longer immigrants are here, the more they assimilate"
You spend more time proving yourself ignorant than you would just by looking up a word when you don't know what it means. Or, since you are so often wrong, maybe you should skip the grammar-nazism and focus on the actual debate topics.
The content is not from an academic at a university
Are you literally blind and stupid? I quoted the encyclopaedia Brittanica to show you that I am correct, so you evidently have issues with your mental health.
You know, when somebody is right, they only need one link, not fifteen.
Assimilation, in ANTHROPOLOGY and SOCIOLOGY, [is] the process whereby individuals or groups of differing ethnic heritage are absorbed into the dominant culture of a society.
Then I'll just use one - yours - since it reinforces that the word use is fine:
It reinforces that you are using the word outside of its correct context you infuriatingly stupid idiot. It's written in black and white and yet still you are refusing to concede that you are wrong:-

You are not an anthropologist and you are not writing in the context of an anthropological research study you wilfully stupid, stubborn little halfwit.

You just ignored every rule concerning commas in a rant about grammar. You're just stupid.
Well, for just one instance, have you ever walked past, or gone into, an Irish Bar in New York where the revelers are enjoying The Craic but remaining within the law and abiding by the customs and practices of their adopted country.
Have you never observed Muslims going to their Mosques in Roman Catholic countries such as Spain of France?
Muslims can retain their customary dress and pursue other traditional practices as well as worshiping their God while embracing the laws and underlying customs of their new home.
Theses are just two examples of aliens having the freedom to follow some of their customs of the OLD COUNTRY without infringing any local laws
Hard lines there shithead but as usual you have made an ass of youself.
Well, for just one instance, have you ever walked past, or gone into, an Irish Bar in New York where the revelers are enjoying The Craic but remaining within the law and abiding by the customs and practices of their adopted country.
Nope.
But I have been to Belfast where the IRA shoots the locals in the kneecaps behind back alleys.
I've also been to Brighton where the IRA planted a large bomb in a hotel and tried to kill a bunch of innocent people.
Face it. The Irish are stupid, backwards, potato-eating barbarians. Ireland is a shithole. The council estates there rival the worst in Europe.
but Confederate monuments are heritage that must stay
Hello Just:
The Confederacy declared WAR on the United States.. What's good about that? The Confederacy LOST that war.. I wouldn't think LOSER generals would be something Trump likes.. But, he DOES.. Is that strange? Why would he do that? The Confederacy supported SLAVERY. Isn't it about time we STOPPED doing that??
The Confederacy declared WAR on the United States.. What's good about that?
What's good about California making the same threats now?
The Confederacy LOST that war.. I wouldn't think LOSER generals would be something Trump likes..
Destroying historical sites as a history lesson is what white Democrats want. Trump wants the reminder of what the Democrats did there for all to think upon. Have you ever chewed on the fact that the white Democrats never once tried to take these statues down before despite many of them being in power since the 1970s and 1980s?
But, he DOES.. Is that strange? Why would he do that? The Confederacy supported SLAVERY.
The union supported slavery. The Civil War was about keeping half of the country from defecting.
I guess if you believe that black is white, and up is down, you COULD say the union supported slavery..
They had slaves. Lots, and lots of slaves. What Con? It makes you feel icky that Northerners bought the blacks sent to them by blacks in Africa? Maybe it should.
What Con? When the Democrats trash the founders as slave owners, you thought the founders were from Alabama?
But, in the REAL world, where I live, it was the Antebellum south who supported slavery..
Stop for a second Con. Imagine all of those Democrats currently in the South. That's right Con. There is no 90% red state as you imagine it to be.
Neverthless, have you noticed that those Southern states are more black than the North and seem to be getting along much better than your Democratic Party hell holes? I must know know your thoughts on that. Do tell.
Sniff sniff. Wait. What's this? Ah, that's right. Let it sink in Con. Don't fight it... I present you with the claims of a rabid, anti Conservative, left wing media rag...
South Now More Integrated, More Racially Diverse
Black people are moving back to the South as cities grow more integrated
Black people are moving back to the South in huge numbers, reversing the Great Migration to northern cities that peaked in during the civil rights turmoil of the 1960s, The New York Times' Sabrina Tavernise and Robert Gebeloff report. And not only are black people moving south, they're moving to the suburbs--meaning metropolitain areas there have become significantly more integrated, according to new census data. Now 58 percent of Southern blacks live in the suburbs.
Since 1960, blacks have begun returning to the South, and now make up 58 percent of the black American population. Isabel Wilkerson, author of a history of the Great Migration, tells PBS that "the outpouring of people from the South, in fact, put pressure on the South and on the North and helped to change the South, and made it a more welcoming place" for both blacks and Latinos.
Ouch. That must have stung. I know it's hard when you first come face to face with the fact that blacks are getting along fine with Conservatives, but feel discriminated against... wherever liberals are in charge...
Confederate Monuments are monuments to those who fought against, and tried to destroy, the United States of America. NOTHING to do with today's immigrants, it's to do with these United States. The PRESIDENT wanted equality, as the Constitution and Bill of Rights denoted. Of course, some of the writers of those items gave a bit more "freedom", and "equality" than others might have intended (liked) ... at the time ... but that was a good thing. It was an AMERICAN THING! It may not have been a Christian thing, completely, but, it was still an anti-cruelty thing, even if some "Christians" didn't like it. Assimilate THAT!
I looked through the debate. What I see is a Conservative point out there's no evidence of any switch and that a Grand Wizard of the KKK was in the Democrat Party for 60 years until 2010, that another Grand Wizard ran as a Democrat in the 1980s, and I see left wingers fumbling around trying in a poor attempt to reconcile their false claim without producing anything.
Byrd supported the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act (and its reauthorization), voted to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a national holiday, supported Hate Crimes Prevention legislation, etc.
He said "the greatest mistake I ever made was joining the Ku Klux Klan."
Strom Thurmond, on the other hand, said "I don't have any regrets" and "I don't have anything to apologize for", and when asked if he thought the Dixiecrats were right, he said, "Yes, I do."
Byrd supported the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act (and its reauthorization), voted to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a national holiday, supported Hate Crimes Prevention legislation, etc.
Donald Trump passed criminal reform and has put blacks into positions of power, including CEO of one of his companies. You don't take it as a sign of what you are implying with Byrd, so why should I accept it with Byrd in your example?
He said "the greatest mistake I ever made was joining the Ku Klux Klan."
Donald Trump said he loves black people. See how this works?
Strom Thurmond, on the other hand, said "I don't have any regrets" and "I don't have anything to apologize for", and when asked if he thought the Dixiecrats were right, he said, "Yes, I do."
Cool. LBJ said he'd have those ni--ers voting Democrat for the next 200 years, so what does that mean?
David Duke praises Rep. Ilhan Omar
He supported a caricature of something she retracted and apologized for - not exactly the same as supporting the Democratic Party
His campaign kept it from passing in 2016. That it took 2 years to convince him to be where everyone else already was does not inure to him any accolades.
"LBJ said he'd have those ni--ers voting Democrat for the next 200 years"
Actually, no, he didn't.
He did say that signing the Civil Rights Act would cost Democrats the South for a generation, which, if anything, was underestimating.
"He's also praised Tlaib and Tulsi Gabbard."
If you honestly think he would vote for either, you are deluding yourself. If Hitler says people should be fit and stop smoking, that doesn't make those things ipso facto bad.
More tellingly, when racists have a rally, do they call it 'Unite the Left' or 'Unite the Right'?
1)You can't objectively prove anyone is or isn't racist.
2) A President can be not racist, while his party in general is.
3)A racist can pretend not to be.
4)The "racist south" voted a Democrat into power from 1976-1980, and this in no way indicates the South switched at the time the left implies there was a switch.
You can't objectively prove anyone is or isn't racist.
False. We can objectively prove Donald Trump is a racist because he wouldn't let blacks stay at his apartment buildings and the federal government sued him because of it.
A President can be not racist
Only a lying, insane retard would try to argue that Donald Trump is not a racist, and congratulations: you are that retard.
False. We can objectively prove Donald Trump is a racist because he wouldn't let blacks stay at his apartment buildings and the federal government sued him because of it.
The files detail dozens of interviews the bureau conducted with Trump building tenants, management and employees, seeking indications that minority tenants were steered away from housing complexes.
Most of those interviewed said they were not aware of any discrimination.
Most of those interviewed said they were not aware of any discrimination.
Yet more lies:-
There was just one hitch: Maxine Brown was black.
Stanley Leibowitz, the rental agent, talked to his boss, Fred C. Trump.
“I asked him what to do and he says, ‘Take the application and put it in a drawer and leave it there,’” Mr. Leibowitz, now 88, recalled in an interview.
Lies, lies and more lies, right Bronto? That's what fascists do best. In fact, that's pretty much the only thing that they do:-
An investigation by The New York Times — drawing on decades-old files from the New York City Commission on Human Rights, internal Justice Department records, court documents and interviews with tenants, civil rights activists and prosecutors — uncovered a long history of racial bias at his family’s properties, in New York and beyond.
Just literally look at how much of a fucking LIAR you are, Bronto. You cut and pasted this part:-
Most of those interviewed said they were not aware of any discrimination.
Which was the first sentence of a paragraph. The rest of that paragraph reads:-
However, some of the records recount the stories of black rental applicants who said they were told no apartments were available, while whites sent to check on the same apartments were offered leases.
The "racist south" voted a Democrat into power from 1976-1980
Wow. 4 whole years in the 1970s? That's amazing. I guess we can forget about the other three hundred years you haven't even mentioned, right? You laughably stupid fucking idiot?
Again, there was no candidate running as a racist in 1960.
Kennedy targeted his campaign in local areas - he gave lots of speeches in the South building up alliances there while largely avoiding the issue, then distributed pamphlets with support from King in black neighborhoods, etc.
And, importantly, picked a Southerner as his VP.
Once he publicly supported equal rights as President, the nail was in the coffin.
