America is a Constitutional Representative Republic not a Democracy. A true democracy is mob rule where the majority can infringe on the rights of the minority. A good and very mainstream example of a true Democracy is two wolves and a lamb deciding whats for diner. Side: Republic
The term, democracy, means that the people vote for a person to govern them. A Republic is a system in which people are governed. Our system works (or suppose to) like this. We elect representatives from our district to represent us, The People. The Senate acts the same way, but over a state instead of a district. This was suppose to help keep the balance of state and federal laws. It gives everyone a voice, even the people living in hick town. So the US is a democracy cause the people vote for people to govern them. Though, the system we use is a republican system. That's why they sometimes say the US is a, "Democratic Republic". Side: Republic
I'm not sure how there can be a debate on this as it's fairly clear if you understand history. The US is a republic. A democracy is a type of government in which basically the majority rules. A republic has a constitution in place to prevent the minority from being completely unrepresented or overridden by the majority. If anyone believes this to be a democracy, you must not be aware of what happened this past November. Side: Republic
