Is Debate Really Helpful?
It seems to me that most people are so entrenched in their viewpoints that it's nearly impossible for them to change. You're never going to convince the far-left liberal that supply-side economics is a good thing. Conversely, you're not going to convince the fiscal conservative that we need universal health care coverage in the United States. Hell, even whether or not you believe in Global Warming is a matter of where you stand politically. And you're not going to get the other side to budge. I don't really want this to be my side is great and the other sucks kind of argument. Instead, I'd like to hear about a time in your life when you changed your viewpoints on any given topic. Did that change come around as part of a debate? Was it a change that happened over time?
I think most of the active members here are relatively open minded, given they, if given a greater amount of adequate evidence against their original position, they would change. As for debate being helpful. Of course it is. It allows for opposing positions to clash. And it's also pretty fun and interesting, as long as the person you are debating is competent in whatever topic it is. 1

Not only should everyone be open minded to new evidence that could change their current position (therefore debate, whether internal or external, is required for accurate positions, I believe that debate has an instrumental value in itself - it benefits those engaging in it, through improving and challenging their understanding, while opening up new perspectives. 1

Yes, debate is very helpful. We know different opinions which we may not aware of. Debate on a particular subject lets people know some other subjects not related to the subject being on debate. Debate also helpful in sharpening our minds. So, debate is the cause of new thoughts with newer dimensions. 0
