Do you think ear cropping and tail docking is necessary?

Hell yes. I see Doberman's with their ears cut to thing spikes and with stubby tails.. I mean it's like cutting off someone's ears entirely, then some of their fingers. They need their big ears to help them cool off, and their tails to help them balance. Not to mention the fact that lobbing off any part of a living animal, you consider to be part of the family, just because you think it looks better, is just wrong.

Presuming a better, minimally painful method of trimming a Doberman's ears and tail; it doesn't significantly harm the animal. Provided you keep the Doberman inside a climate controlled house, primarily, he wouldn't need the ears to help keep him cool (however ears do that). The trimming of ears doesn't affect hearing (it would be counter beneficial to harm a gaurds dogs hearing). And a dog doesn't use it's tail for balance that much; that is a cat. [(Me thinks Jungelson is a cat person) not that there is anything wrong with that.]

Is it "just wrong" to pay for one's, probably second, wife's plastic surgery?

No because it is the wife's choice. If you said " Honey I don't like your nose, I'm gonna cut it off because I think it will look better, and you have no say in this" then yes, that is just wrong. Which is the equivalent of what you are doing to the dogs. And furthermore, why the hell would you keep the dog locked up in the house all it's life? And dogs do use their tails for balance. You hear more about it with cats because they are constantly climbing on fences and narrow walls, e.t.c. But dogs use their tails for balance too.

I think they're unnecessary, unless done for medical reasons.

It isn't necessary at all! What does it achieve apart from a dog or what ever barely looking like what they're supposed to be? Medical reasons fine, anything but, isn't.

I don't like it... of course human freaks have been doing worse to themselves since forever so... who knows, maybe the animals like it? Afterall, they just want to be like everyone else.

I agree that it is cruel but for some dogs it is necessary (herding dogs for instance), it also makes it harder for dogs to interact with other dogs as a wagging tail shows other dogs they are being friendly, or if a dogs tail is down between its legs it shows its scared. I was once told by a vet that for breeds that have always had their tails docked that over time that breeds body evolves to being used to not having a tail, so that it was better to dock the tail, I'm not sure how true that is I would've thought if it was they'd have evolved to be tailless

Naw. It is done before they can even feel it. In some cases it is necessary.

Some cases, but few. Most people do it for breed standards. And it isn't done before they can feel it. The animals come out of the surgery screaming in pain so many times. Pain meds can do a lot but they can't completely eliminate that level of pain and the animals do suffer. Plus, with ear cropping, the animals have to walk around with their ears wrapped for weeks to maintain the unnatural shape... I know this because I worked for a vet. My boss refused to do it unless medically necessary (herding dogs whose tails may get caught in a gate, for instance) but I was sent to our sister office several times where the procedure was done and the sounds those poor animals made were unnatural, like something out of a horror movie. Dew claw removal is another terrible one, but it's less common unless for a health reason - at least in my area.
