Is Ghost Writing Ethical?

Ghost writing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost-writer) is the practice of one person paying another to write material, after which the credit will be given to another person in return for payment, usually without any credit to the actual author.

Personally, I find this no different than a kid in school paying another kid to do their homework, and most people agree that that's completely unethical. From a social perspective, I see ghost writing as a form of fraud, since someone is selling a book under the impression that they've authored it themselves, when this is untrue.

Is ghost writing (specifically where the true author receives no credit at all) different, and if so, how?

Ghost Writing has been with us forever Cerin and it is a very ethical way to create a book. Not all of us have the talent to actually write a book and asking a seasoned writer to help you is not outside the bounds of validity. I have never seen a book that didn't give the writer credit for his/her work. Writing is a very tedious and particular art. All of us have a story to tell but not all of us have the credentials or talent to do so.

I didn't say all forms of ghost writing are unethical. I certainly agree it's fair to get help writing a book. My only complaint is when the true author goes uncredited, which is not uncommon.

Yes, that is a very valid argument but I truly do not know how common or uncommon it really is. Is there somewhere I can go to learn more about this behavior in ghost writing?

It is frustrating that you get to see your write-ups being published by somebody else with no actual credit from the real author. Even if they are paying you to write it up. I had experience it before and I cant specify my feelings If I'll be feeling proud or frustrated. Sure it is nice to see your write up's being publish but it also gets annoying another author for it. Just is life.

I think ghost writing is O.K. as long as there is an agreement that the ghost writer will get his/her fair share of the royalties.

People paying other people to write books is OK. People falsely claiming authorship of books written by others (even with that person's consent) is fraud.
