Is Imagination is more Important than Knowledge?

Albert Einstein once said "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” But placed into modern context, is this true?

With today's society placing a heavier emphasis on academic qualifications, is imagination still more important? Undecided

Imagination is by far important. By imagining things which do not and presently cannot exist, those things eventually can! And using imaginary numbers, such as radical negative one, mathematical calculations can be accomplished that knowledge of what is 'real' would not have allowed.

Well, yeah we need them both, but knowledge is more important because we imagined sending a man to the moon for years and years.

We didn't actually do it until we had the knowledge to achieve the technologies to do so.

Yes, imagination does help by giving us ideas and motivation, but knowledge is key if you want to walk the walk. Witch is what the U.S. did.

We put an American flag on the moon and showed up every other country in the world. (not to brag) We did all of that with the help of both imagination and knowledge.

Knowledge wasn't the key, but the lesser sibling. Imaginatively expanding current knowledge and sharing it within the project lead to a man on the moon quicker than any other nation.

And who funded the venture to put a man on the moon? Why? Because of their knowledge? Or because they were motivated to hand over the bucks while imagining sticking it to the Russians at the end of the day.

Knowledge is inert.

What if you didn't know how to imagine? What if you didn't know how to think at all?

Even if you could imagine without knowledge, what good would it be if you didn't know how to communicate and share it?

See how important knowledge is?

Surprised you didn't know that. (;

I would first like to thank you for quoting, and not paraphrasing.

Secondly, the beat down.

Imagination is a natural ability. While people may be born with a certain aptitude for math or artistic ability or whatever allows you to express that imagination, we all have an imagination. Even dogs dream. Knowledge is a compliment to your imagination. Someone, at some point, imagined a possibility and created a piece of knowledge. That collection of thoughts became public knowledge. We as a species have imagined everything that we know, as individuals.

If you visit Lascaux, you see cave paintings from ancient people without much knowledge, only their imagination. They developed an ability to express what they saw and learned from their environment. That is the development of knowledge from imagination. Through the centuries that knowledge has grown from individuals imagining new ways of accomplishing artistic endeavors. Using oils and other mediums, instead of charcoal and ash.

One of the best artistic experiences I have ever had was also in France. There is a limestone quarry in the heart of Provence... a dark and cold cave with tall flat white walls, not far from the Medieval city of Les Baux. During the summer you can enter the cave and escape into a dream. A chill takes over your body instantainiously, and you can hear classical piano echoing from inside the cave. Upon the walls are the bright blue projections of the masterpieces of Cezanne. They pan across their rigid canvas like ghosts and sometimes catch you in their light. It is the most beautifully chilling way to experience an artist's work. You can feel alone, vulnerable, sometimes scared. But ultimately you feel at piece, and it is amazing.

That is the product of knowledge applied to the foundation of a great imagination. They do a different artist every year. The video is of Gogh, I went for Cezanne. But I would recommend this trip for anyone, any year.

Answer me this: Where does Knowledge come from?

Without Imagination would we have conceptualized things like geometry, mathematics, sciences?

Would we have discovered the physical applications of these concepts? Would we have built the pyramids?

Imagination drives knowledge, they are inseperable. We imagine our world in order to know how to both interpret it and mould it.

My proof? The Revolution of the Personal Computer. People like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs (amongst others), imagined that one day there could be a computer in every home; a Personal Computer.

Imagination has contributed to innovation and revolution the world over, now and forever.

Sure, I can imagine that there is a Personal Computer in front of me right now, but that doesn't help me actually buying or creating one does it? I could imagine that Personal Computers run on fried eggs and bacon, but that wouldn't work would it?

I can imagine food until I starve, but I need to know how to obtain food in order to actually eat don't I?

Imagination contributes, it doesn't make up the whole as knowledge does.

I'll end this with one question: do you know what imagination is?

Imagination would help, it wouldn't be needed.

Need proof? I proved that 1+1=2 because I know that that is the answer because I know from personal knowledge that by having one apple on my desk and then adding a second apple to the desk will then equal me having two apples on the desk. I can imagine otherwise, but if it cannot be proven to work, Imagination does not help, nor should it be needed.

Imagination allows us to improve on existing knowledge or or improvise solutions when knowledge is insufficient. It takes imagination to do anything with the knowledge you have and imagination was required to discover it in the first place.

One doesn't need imagination to employ knowledge. I don't need any form of imagination to utilize the knowledge which i have already gained. Example, no form of imagination is used when solving the equation 1+1. I have learnt, and hence acquire knowledge, that the combination of these two numbers equals 2. And this point is valid for the very survival itself. As a child I was curious as to what it would feel like to put my hand in an oven when my mother was cooking, I learnt my lesson that an unpleasant burning sensation would be a results of these actions, and it if for this that I know not to put my hand in an oven while it is on. I implied knowledge to discover something that imagination could not do itself.

I disagree.

The knowledge required to communicate what you have imagined does nothing to stifle or encourage that which you imagine. Even if I were to imagine something that I did not posses the knowledge to communicate, I certainly would still have had that imagination.

The very act of thinking is itself imagining. Thoughts are abstract entities, often involving pictures seen entirely within our minds. If we were to hold your affirmation here as correct, we could deduce that those who are born deaf, mute and blind would have absolutely no ability to think as they also have no means by which to take in knowledge, which is obviously incorrect. The potential of imaginative thought is not bound by our knowledge, though our ability to communicate it may be, however that is not the subject of the debate at hand.

This is not to say that I value imagination over knowledge; I hold both in equal high regards. However, I disagree completely with your method of reasoning here.

”If we were to hold your affirmation here as correct, we could deduce that those who are born deaf, mute and blind would have absolutely no ability to think as they also have no means by which to take in knowledge, which is obviously incorrect.”

In the case of a natural born deaf, mute, and blind individual, I would first point out that the individual has three remaining senses whereby experiences are acquired. The entirety of such a one’s creative imagination is limited by the knowledge of the experiences of taste, smell, and touch.

Experience precedes knowledge…

We can imagine the ride of traveling through a worm-hole, yet every detail of the imagination of such a journey is the creative utilization of knowledge that is acquired by experience.

We could assert that George Lucas is imaginative, (Star Wars). And such would be true, however, every element of his vast imagination is an application of his experiences through knowledge. If he was blind, mute, and deaf he might imagine the taste, touch and smell of food from a meal far, far, away.

I agree that imagination, or the creative utilization of knowledge is very important, but I also assert knowledge is the foundation of imagination.

Imagination is alive and knowledge is dead.

If creative utilization of knowledge = imagination, then imagination is the bridge from a less knowledgeable state to a more educated one.

If you are starving to death in the first place, presumably in a unfamiliar environment, you're current knowledge has not served you.

You need creativity and imagination to survive, to find your way to the food.

Knowledge is second to imagination as it alone leaves you helpless in unfamiliar circumstances.

This is especially true in a world where you can easily GOOGLE food and it appears. All knowledge is a result of imagination, tested in the real world.

Knowledge is by definition stagnant, unlike the world we live in. This makes it close to worthless as it's soon obsolete when someone with imagination improves on it and shares it with the rest of the world.

I have a FOR and AGAINST for this, but I'll start with the FOR.

If I were to see a blue car driving, it is obvious that with that knowledge and memory that I am able to make use of that within my imagination. This is because the mind is able to memorize the images as they are sent from our eyes. Now we don't always remember everything, however, somewhere deep inside our mind, that memory is there, we just can't seem to be able to find it. Sometimes we get close, but we never completely remember (i.e the phrase "on the tip of the tongue").

So now, I imagine a blue car driving, down Long-Bottom street, but wait... how could I imagine Long-Bottom street when I have not seen it? Well, obviously I have knowledge of street signs, and they are named for different reasons and are associated with the words 'street, court, lane, drive, etc,' so therefore the mind is able to add all of these together in order to create something entirely new!

Imagination is a powerful and fun accessory, however, knowledge is highly important if we are to use it.

Side: Knowledge is more Important
SMCdeBater(242) Disputed

Now, for the AGAINST:

I am Imagining a blue car driving down Long-Bottom Street, and all of a sudden a big scary monster with 5 blue arms, red hair and 20 green tentacles come along and eats the car. Oh, and did I mention that this monster is actually the twin brother of former president George Bush?

Now, right away, I'm going to say that none of the above is actually true, and such an event did not happen, just to silence any hypocrites out there. This is just to say that just because we imagine something, that doesn't necessarily mean that it is true. After all, George Bush doesn't have 5 blue arms, red hair or 20 green tentacles does he?

My point is that even though we need knowledge to be able to place things together in our minds, that doesn't necessarily mean that we cannot extend it beyond the point of insanity!

Does this make the Imagination more important? The answer is no, because reality is more important. Disagree? Then you obviously do not exist, and you better get a virtual doctor to check that out!

Reality is neither-or, just because something is reality, does not make it knowledge. The concept of reality is much more complex then the concepts of both imagination and knowledge. I may imagine and conspire that my next-door neighbor is a drug dealer because I see him meet 'shady' looking people out the front of his house, and and make a 'shady' transaction between money and a brown paper bag, but I do not KNOW that he is a drug dealer. My knowledge is that he is selling brown paper bags and there contents for money, I imagine that there is drugs in the bag due to other facts such as his bad reputation, and the 'shady' looking people he meets up with. It may be reality that he is a drug dealer, but this in neither knowledge or imagination.

Side: Knowledge is more Important
