Is Marriage a Right?

It's a right to marry someone of the opposite sex. that is currently what marriage is... well, what it's always been.

i'm against proposition 8, but people seem to be fighting against the ban on gay marriage in a completely wrong way. if we learn more about these things, it will be easier to have a LOGICAL discussion on the government's role in marriage.

Agreed, whether or not my religion has anything to do with it.

Side: yes

Well, if it is not a right, then we can tell people that they need to pass a test before getting a marriage license and this would give us more control over the gene pool. But then that government agency would probably end up like the DMV and everyone would opt out of marriage all together. ;)

I think that this is a valid question. Nowhere is marriage outlined as a right in the same way that voting, or freedom of speech is. The legal definition of marriage is well founded in religion and is recognized by governments for tax purposes only. It is a convenient mechanism to account for non-working citizens and to attach a minor to one or more parents. Beyond that, marriage has little meaning outside of its initial, religious context. As a consequence of this view, I have little issue with gay marriage. It seems to me that in denying this arbitrary title to homosexual couples the American public is only aggravating an issue that would be easily solved by putting aside personnel prejudices, and radical agendas. I mean really, if you think about it if homosexuality really is a biological factor then by allowing gay marriages we're diluting the possibility of those tendencies being passed on to the next generation. Everybody gets what they want.

Side: not as marriage is currently enforced

It is now 2015 and the Supreme Court has declared Gay Marriage to be a right.
