Is Patriotism Illogical?

USA!!!

Patriotism is good, Nationalism bad, patriotism is justice seeking and not ignorant of the true nature and character of the country, Nationalism is ignorant and cannot see the true nature and character of the country because the nation is defined as the best independent of reasoned arguments.

What logical reason does one have to support the country they were born in/live in over others?

You were born here and not there. ^^

That, My friend is Nationalism. To be a Patriot is to love your country, not to think that your country is superior, you might want it to become superior though. To be a Patriot is to die for your country, to be a Nationalist is to want to bring your country's law to other countries and to want to colonize other countries because you believe they are not worthy of existence because your country is superior. Think of Nazi Germany. Most of us are Patriots. Not be a patriot is to hate your country, if you don't hate your country then you are at least slightly patriotic.

My country has been to the moon. Maybe it's illogical to be patriotic if you were born in a lesser country Like France, Somalia, or North Korea.

I resent posting under "USA!!!" instead of "No."

Still, I don't think it's illogical. Its just manifestation of competition on a large scale, where people cheer for their home team and what it to be the best.

The way I see it is that Patriots are good, Nationalists aren't. Because nationalism goes beyond patriotic acts, like fighting for ones country, and turns one's country into a a sort of religion, glorifying and idolising national symbols.

The fact that I am posting this argument under U.S.A, just makes me resent the country even more. The debate creator either believes oneof these things:

1) Only USA citizens can be patriotic

2) Only USA speaks English

3) Only USA has internet

4) Only USA exists

I don't know which one of these it is, but since I have to post an argument with a patriotic shout I'll settle with God Save the Queen and all that.

Patiotism is good, and everyone should be proud of where they come from, Patriotism becomes illogical when people love their country that they mock, disrespect other countries in order to validate their's. if one becomes ethnocentric due to the patriotism they have towards the country it becomes illogical

Side: USA!!!

Patriotism has its extremes and Americans should avoid those extremes.

I suppose you could say that patriotism is a kind of appeal to popularity. In that sense I would consider it fallacious.

I think it would be more accurate to point out that patriotism is immoral if anything. Patriotism is counterproductive to the human species as a whole. It divides people and breeds intolerance when in actuality we had no control over what flag we were born under in the first place.

I have to say you summarised my views on the topic quite well, patriotism is the vilest of all mans ideals.

I wasn't interpreting it to be taken to such an extreme. Yeah, taken too far it could be a problem. Pretty much harmless otherwise, though. ^^

my sense of patriotism is being a responsible citizen of ones country, to love it, but also justice and to promote justice in the world via the appropriate governance and coordination of the nation one belongs to, no matter what nation that may be. I think of nationalism as being immoral and counterproductive but i think there is a categorical difference between nationalism and patriotism.

It pretty much is, because nations and borders are just artificail man made things. But I do love the USA, not because I actually agree with the concept of patriotism, but because it is a symbol of freedom.

There is such a thin line between patriotism and delusional nationalist superiority. Absolutely cringe-worthy when taken to the extremes (something I see way too much within the US).
