Is Race Talked About Too Much in School?

President Trump claimed that we do. Use his arguments as a starting point to state your own position.

This just feels ridiculous. The 'left-wing indoctrination' President Trump is so afraid of seems like simply being educated enough to form your own opinion and not blatantly accept whatever conspiracy theories you come across.

The federal government doesn’t have the power/right to decide what is taught in schools or what is left out of education, and attempting to give them that right is paradoxical to what this country stands for. The U.S. has done some insanely screwed-up things throughout history, and lots of school systems barely go over it as it is. The only way for future generations to avoid the mistakes that we as a country have made in the past is to actually learn about those mistakes in depth and how they affected people of that time.

To control the education system is to control the next generation of eligible voters. We cannot let them go though life without having a decent understanding of our history.

I think you are so right in the fact that not teaching students our history properly will affect us in the future and the way that this country will develop. It's important for students to know the truth about the past so that they can form their own beliefs and morals.

You seem a very opinionated and confident respondent for someone who only joined one hour ago.

Is there anything you'd like to tell us?

Would you agree that race is a touchy or sensitive subject? Most would say yes. This could be because race is not talked about enough. Race should be talked about more, especially in school. Both the good and the bad should be talked about. Everyone needs to know the mistakes that were made so that everyone can know what was wrong with America back then. For example, slavery. Slavery needs to be talked about so that everyone can see how horrible it was and so that those decisions and choices can never resurface.

I agree that race is a sensitive subject because it is not talked about enough. If it became a normalized discussion where people respected others opinions then it would not be a topic that people are on the line about talking about it.

I also agree with this, I feel like in today's society, people with differences would rather yell and fight rather then sit down and have a civilized discussion with others. I agree that talking about race and racism in school is justified, but we also need to teach people to be civilized during disagreements and other things.

agreed. we still need to learn about these parts of our history to completely understand it.

We do not talk about race too much in school. Race had a huge impact on our history and we need to learn about it. Even when we do talk about race the topics we talk about are very basic and do not go very deep in order to avoid making people uncomfortable. Not covering the deeper topics prevent one from truly understanding our country's history.

2 points

No, not at all. Race is an important topic in our education system. Learning about the past and the struggles that people faced because of race is important because it teaches students the mistakes done in the past and helps them see the problems of the present. And if teachers teach about problems that our society is facing with race in the present, that's just as fine. They just need to make sure to do it in a way in which a student is still able to form their own opinions and teach themselves about their own morals and beliefs. I don't think race is talked about to much and since it's clearly still a problem that we as people are facing, maybe we need to talk about it a little more until eventually different races are seen as an amazing thing and something to be loved about instead of hated.

Race is not talked about too much in school. Race is a big part of our history whether we like it or not. Talking about slavery or civil rights should not be considered left-wing. The president should not be able to decide what we can learn about.

I do not think race is talked about too much. I think that if a student is planning to take any type of history or government class, race is going to be discussed because it needs to be discussed. Mississippi Studies talked about slavery and segregation, World History talks about the Columbian Exchange and slave trade, US History obviously talked about race, and just about every year and grade a topic about race is brought up. Like we would not understand alot of things if we did not understand slavery and segregation and discrimination. Like there are laws and amendments that every person should know based on race and it's important to understand why it is an amendment and why it is a law and what events happened to make it an amendment or law. You have to learn the history to not repeat it, and maybe if Race was talked about more then there would not be such a huge problem with it today.

Totally support you 100%. Loved the way you explained each history class as an example. Well said!!!

Honestly I don’t think it’s talked about enough. If we ever wanna learn from the past and not repeat our mistakes, our history needs to be over saturated.

What do you mean our history needs to be over saturated? Why?

This is my view on what they said, but I think they meant it as we need to have a bigger emphasis on what our country did to many races and other things so we could realize the huge impact they had so that we could prevent it.

American citizens in the past were very insensitive to people of color and treated them extremely poorly to say the least. I think that subject needs to be talked about in school. Going into the world blindsided about the systematic racism is not what people need to be doing. Especially not in this generation. There are movements such as Black Lives Matter that are happening in the world right now. I think that needs to be talked about in school. Its history happening right now. Race does not need to take over everything in the classroom but I do think that it is extremely important to talk about. Dialogue and discussions about race and racism is important as long as it is open, honest, and a conversation where every listens to the questions and opinons of others without bashing them. I do not think race is talked about too much in school.

I don't think race is talked about too much in school. Especially right now because of all the mess that our country is going through. We should be taught in school about all the things that have happened to our country which can in turn teach kids to not be racist against one another. Race is a very sensitive topic to some people so it has to be talked about carefully. Therefore, it can bring on a lot of subjective topics or it can enlighten other topics. I think that talking about race can be a good thing because it lets students understand more instead of staying in their one way of thinking. Also, it helps kids have real world conversations with one another because a lot of people have discussions on race and equality.

I believe schools teaching us about race and how it has effected our history is very important to understand. I just believe the way in which it is taught needs to be handled with very close respect to what actually happened. One thing I really hate is when teachers, specifically history teachers, will brush past a certain part of history because of how dark or morbid it may be. Obviously I don't want to know like all of the gruesome details about how person was treated, but it's important to know the things that have heavily impacted humans as a whole. When we brush past and don't teach about the past of race people will often not understand or sympathize with the living situations now. I say now because the past still impacts the present very much and how people live. That's why I say we need to be taught about race and its origin because it will allow everyone to truly understand and sympathize with anyone's morals or living conditions now. Ignorance and stubbornness is to blame for the systematic racism and discrimination that still happens to this day and if we teach it right in school by doing the things I have stated I'm sure it could help shape people's morals and understandings. To answer the question directly I don't think race is necessarily talked about too much in school but rather the way it can be taught can be more in detail, we need to embrace what happened and know we can change how it impacts people today.

In my opinion, the topic of race and racism being talked about school is justified and okay. I think the amount of how much we talk about it is okay. Part of America's vision was that everyone had equal rights and equal opportunities. If we stay true to this vision I believe racism and race needs to be talked about in school. There was this one quote in this book I read, it had talked about if you wanted to remove weeds from your lawn, you would have to remove it from the roots, something like that. I think this is a good analogy to today's viewpoint on race and racism as if we want to make a change in this country we have to start from the beginning, not elementary school, but somewhere around middle school and high school, this is when students start to grasp and try to understand the world. If we want racism in today's society to be gone, we need to educate students on the effects racism has and what it does to others. If we want to change, we need to address our faults, and that is when we can try to change.

I don't see race talked about much in school as some people make it out like it is. The very few times race had been talked about has been in history learning about slavery in America and equal rights which is a time period were it should be learned and talk about in the class room to learn form the mistakes that have been made in hopes to keep them from every happening again. If slavery in America and the war that was fought over it are completely forgotten will that some how fix all the problems or dose that give us a risk of repeating that mistake in history. That's why I feel if the subject dose need some type of attention from people to learn more about it.

At least in Mississippi, not too much in my opinion. I mean the basic stuff is there but there but there's not a lot of detail of effects of racism. Yes, they discuss slavery and the civil rights movement but they only list the adversities POC faced back then and then they go on to say it was fixed by this act or amendment. None of them really discuss how it still effects us today. If anything, we should talk about race more. Racism is so intertwined to U.S. history, it would be ignorant not to talk about it extensively. I mean our country had a civil war over this! How could you not talk about it? And by discussing racism's effects and its impact today, the country can heal further. By acknowledging the U.S.'s terrible past, we can create a better future and not make the same mistakes as our ancestors. Would any of this be happening now if we had acknowledged our history and tried to fix it earlier on? Maybe not. Racism is kind of like a weed. Ignore it and it will overrun a whole garden. Pull it out by the roots and it will make it incredibly harder to grow back.

I do not agree with President Trump on this one. I personally think that race is not talked about enough in the school education system. In a way its like cutting out a piece of history. The education system needs to actually go farther into race so that things can be learned and we don't repeat the mistakes. Race played a major role in history even though it was mostly negative. But we should still learn about it. We need to understand our countries history. In this way we can learn and grow more as a society.

Is race talked about too much is school? The Answer is NO. If anything... its not talked about enough. i feel that race should be identified when talking about a person. If the question is referring to historical context, then especially in the historical subject. race is not talked about enough in the education perioddd.
