Is classic/older music better than modern music?

Hell yes! Older music was actually made with some effort put into it, most (not all) modern music is just dished out with the profit in mind.

So technical metal doesn't require any effort? Really now, I beg to differ.

I'm actually going to disagree with the profit notion. I think a lot of musicians create what they believe to be good music and the record companies jack up the prices to line their pockets- just like big business. And then there's pop music, the actual bad music that has a generically good beat so it acts as an attention grabber.

Side: No

it is because music of "now" or hip hop isnt music it is just speaking to music really and thats just rap

yes actually i think it is. Now days lots of singers use autotune, which is quite a bit like cheating. Also when you listen to old music you get the feel and the emotions/essence is brought through by the words. Some modern songs hardly make sense and are all about Love, but classic music may have been random, but the words used made so much sense it came across as beautiful music.

Younger people of course would think that there music is better/superior to the older music because that's all they've ever been experienced to. They've never heard the original more sophisticated music of the past so really they have a 1 sided bias already coming in. Yes i do think that the music of yesterday is better in a sense that it was more original, better performed, and contained much more emotion and feeling than the so called "modern" music. And I know this from first hand experience. But ultimately it depends on your taste.

Way back when, in the times of Classical Music, composers such as Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven wrote music after many years of study in theory and practice. Modern(er) music, e.g. classic rock, I find to be much more bearable than some of the garbage produced by the music industry these days. Modern music can be made by anyone, and while this does provide freedom and opportunity, professional composition should be left to, well, the professionals. Not to say that I dislike ALL Modern music, in fact I find it to be at times more creative, but I find Older music more considered and intelligent.

Yes it is! Music had meaning back then when musicians created music to because they loved music. Now they just do it for fame.

My argument is this: In classic music, there was much more musicianship present. In todays POPULAR music it is all digitally produced with very little actual instrumentation. Now definitely everyone has their tastes in music however if you're actually talking about the MUSIC, then old is definitely better. There was more of a uniqueness to music back then as to where today you get majority of the same sounding songs. Even lyrically this is true. Classic music always told a story in a very well thought out poetic way, today there is just not as much though put into the lyrics. So in conclusion i'll say yes, i believe music back when was much better from a musicians stand point, and todays "music" is more of a form of entertainment.

If you want it to be, anyway. I agree with you; I listen to music that sounds good to me. Sometimes music is synthesized/digitally produced for stylistic purposes, which is still artistic in its own right. It may not be "real," but that doesn't mean I'm not going to like how it sounds. Likewise, I can't get myself to enjoy the sound of classical music, and for me that's all that really matters.

Anyway, like I was saying, music is certainly used for entertainment for some people, but others do like to find meaning in their music. I personally prefer to find meaning in movies and books (but in both cases I love purely entertaining ones just as much). Music does not have a set purpose, is what I'm trying to say.

After listening to some old music I realized this was way more better the crape modern music on the radio. The old music was well made but to me when I listen to modern music It feels like they put in randoms words and made it a song.

Side: Yes

No genre of music is better or worse than any other genre of music, its all opinion.

Side: No

If you examine all "classic/older" music (as opposed to just the popular and successful tracks that people still remember) and all modern music (as opposed to just the electronically altered crap on the radio) I think you'll find that new and old have equal parts crap, equal parts greatness. a lot of people default to older music because all the work has already been done; all the good tracks have already been pointed out and recognized. If you choose to listen to modern music, you have to do this for yourself, and it's sometimes pretty hard work.

Each one has its own tastes. Some people prefer old music, some people prefer modern music. However, in my opinion, modern music is better. There are no rational arguments to defend this. I prefer modern music because it pleases me more than old music. Simple as that.

I totally agree! Classical music goes in one ear and out the other for me. It may be 'supposed' to evoke emotion, but for me it does nothing. Modern music pleases me more as well. There's not much I can do to change that...

Depends what you listen. If it's crap you like then of course older is better.

I tend to sift through albums and look for the quality stuff. You really need to search for the good stuff, as most is crap (seems to apply to all creative work, majority is crap or just toward crappy).

Well if you ask a parent or a grandparent that, they'll obviously tell you that today's music is crap but the older generation will always argue that their time was better than ours.

I do not support that view.

Simply because I think good music can still be found, a lot of it actually, and just because the mass media and the entertainment industry has made it hard to believe in such a thing doesn't mean we should give up on it. Yes the mainstream kind of empty music is everywhere, on our screens, on the radio, in the internet... But there are some really good indie/rock/alternative and so on bands out there, and we just need to look for them. There is some very inspiring contemporary music out there too, composed by some of the greatest artists this world's ever seen.

While I do agree that it is possible to find good music today, some music is truly incredible, I feel that it was EASIER to find good music in previous generations. Your main point seems to be that older generations are dismissive of younger work, and that it is still possible to find quality music. However, our generation (yes, I'm 17) seems to be dismissive of older generations' work.

When people make this statement, they're comparing classic rock to the pop charts. Most of the bad music from previous decades has been forgotten, and all that's left are the classics. Of those, not even all of them ended up being hits when they were released. I have found a lot of truly awful music that topped the charts back then. The difference is that those are not played on the radio, unlike current bad but popular songs.

Now, I do realize that there are certain time periods where pop music is better than other times. My least favorites include 1956-1963, 1977-1980, 1987-1991 (my personal least favorite), 1998-2000, and 2004-2007. Other than the club pop boom of 2010, I think pop music has improved since about 2008. Maybe others think differently depending on which trends they like or dislike, but to me music has always been hit or miss throughout history.

Side: No

I like the modern music because it rocks and has the beat and it is loud.
