Is genetically modified food good or bad?

Strictly speaking, just about every plant that is cultivated by man rather than harvested in the wild is genetically modified.

Why is direct modification of the genome considered worse than thousands of years of selective breeding? The latter takes many generations for beneficial changes to occur, IF you can even get what you're looking for. The Former allows for results now, and with a greater degree of accuracy. Direct genetic modification could be used in the very short term to alleviate famine by tossing up a crop of quickly-maturing high-yield plants, even at a cost of nutritional value- and thats just one example.

People seem to have this love affair with 'natural-' Well, if we did everything naturally, we'd have a life expectancy of half of what we currently enjoy, maternal and infant mortality rates orders of magnitudes higher, and no internet to post our 'go green' soapboxes on.

Why wouldn't genetically modified foods be good? Things are genetically modified to have desirable traits (such as being larger or producing more/better product).

People are starving. If you don't want GMO crops, that's fine, we won't force them down your throat. But for the rest of the world, a miracle crop would save millions of lives. Putting a ban on GMOs condemns people all over the world to die of starvation so that you can feel safe that a "Maximum Ride" scenario in which humans are genetically modified to have wings won't play out in the real world. (Spoiler alert: it wouldn't have anyway)

I, for one, would not want a pair of wings- at least not ones that were big enough to actually sustain flight given what humans weigh. I wouldn't want the hollow bones and all the other physical compromises that would be needed to make reasonably sized wings possible either.

Why wouldn't bigger, healthier, tastier fruits and vegetables be better? I don't know about you, but that sounds like a pretty noble cause to me, considering hundreds of people are starving in the US alone. So I say keep innovating and create the biggest best fruit or vegetable we can.

When it comes to putting things into my body, I prefer the natural stuff. I try to choose as organic foods, soaps and everything as I can, but with the lack of organic alternatives in the stores, it's hard. (I don't know if you lack organic products in the US) I choose this site, not because I think the other is bad, but I just refuse to believe it can possibly be better.

just wait till we start messn w/ genetically modified human DNA

Uhm .. I'm pretty sure we already do that .

And what is so wrong with the alteration of human DNA? As I said before, the modification of genetics involves having the desirable traits become present. Desirable traits in humans could include just overall physical performance. What is the worse that can happen with genetic modification (excluding the idea of a horribly mutated genetic monster)? And if you say "you're basically playing god" I swear that I will ban you.

Aren't we manipulating genes when treating certain diseases? If yes, wouldn't that count as genetically modifying human DNA? I'm no doctor, so .. this is just a question.

There is also rumors going around, that scientists want to try and make a woman conceive with a woman, as this has been successfully done with mice several times. If they were allowed to do that, wouldn't that be a pretty huge modification of genes?

Im one of those humans, I was ubducted a few years back and taken by a highly advanced extraterrestrial race called the deciples, I was then implanted and genetically modified with higher brain function and put back on earth to prepare the human race for whats to come.

I also meet Jesus he was the Capitan of the vessel I was taken on called the crucifixion, a massive 40 mile space ship capable of transdimensional space travel, I was taken by Jesus and his crew to the 11th dimension to meet the creator and was given an important message to bring to you all, I will reveal that message when the time is right and when humans are ready.
