Well consider chemotherapy that might save your kids life OR might just make the rest of their life miserable. Who should get to make the call? The doctors? A court of Law?

Side: Yes

Interesting point, but this is an extreme case, there are situations where a procedure doesn't have these polar extremes.

What about a simple blood transfusion in the case of Jehovah's witnesses, where the procedure could save the life of a child that hasn't come of age to decide for themselves what they actually want to believe.

I had lymphoma when I was 12 and my belief was that I was cured by the surgery. I still had to endure 18 months of chemotherapy even though the tests following the surgery never detected the presence of any malignancy. My parents consented to the oncologists "treatment plan" and I was subjected to having poisons injected into my bloodstream, bone marrow and spinal fluid many many times, and it made me very very sick. The reason given was that the treatment should be given as an insurance policy, just in case there were cancer cells somewhere that were undetectable. Even though that if it were left up to me I would have refused the chemotherapy, I never had misgivings toward my parents for going with the doctors plan, but should a parent decide not to go with the doctors plan, I think they should have a right to.

This is an awesome topic for debate.

Society should play some role in protecting children from unfit parents, but to make legislation that takes the decision making power away from parents seems like a slippery slope.

"Do no harm" used to be the oath that doctors would take. Patients did expect that the doctor could heal everything, but they did have the expectation that the doctor wouldn't make them worse. Over the years, that's basically gone out the window. Now, doctors are in bed with the pharmaceutical companies and they get huge kick-backs for prescribing certain drugs. Doctors have become civilized drugs dealers, where it's all about moving products and getting that almighty dollar. Just try getting in and out of a doctor's office without a prescription for something. And if I'm truly ill, then fine. But doctors have become less worried about being healthy and more worried about writing a prescription. We now live a world of so many isms and itises that there's always something they can write. If you fidget your foot too much while you're setting still, you have a serious condition. And then comes the script. Several years back my cholesterol was borderline, not really high, but on the way there. The doctor starts writing these prescriptions for drugs that have well-known negative side-effects.

"Doctor," I said. "Can't I get this under control by changing my diet?" And he looked right at me and said "How many people can really do that?" So, yeah... Fuck doctors.

Go back to basics. Eat right. Try not to be a fat ass. Get some exercise everyday. And you'll be surprised how much IS NOT wrong with you.

Don't they get to live forever anyway ?

Of course they do but longer lives on earth means that my non-believers have a longer chance to convert.

I once heard about a couple who were Jehova's Witnesses.

Their child needed blood, but because of their sick religion, the child died. Apparently Jehova's Witnesses can't recieve or give blood.. I don't know why.

I think Jehova's witnesses is the religion I hate the most, maybe Islam tops the list.. but I don't know.

Every human on earth should be given the choice to believe something or not.

I think it depends on the age of the child. If they are 14 or so then they have understanding of their religion and can make there own decision whether they want to follow there beliefs or not. But if it's a young child then it is definitely wrong because the child's health should come first since the child isn't old enough to agree to the beliefs.

no it is not okay just because you happen to believe in a religion(all nonsense as far as im concerned but each to their own) does not give you the right to deprive another human being of medical help that could save their life

No, because it is really not the parent's choice. It's the child's choice: and if the child is too young to understand, the law and government speak for the child instead. Especally if it's a serious illness/accident.

Side: No

If denying a child medical treatment that could save the life of the child, it would be criminal.
