Argue your own religious views, or accept other beliefs?

Whether you are an Aetheist, Christian, Muslim, Jew or have any other beliefs, whats the better option? Should we try to argue that our own beliefs are better, which could lead to some wars (E.g. The Crusades) or just accept that others will believe whatever they want, possibly sacrificing their beneficial afterlife?

First of all, argue is the wrong word in this situation. I enjoy, and recommend, discussion of religious views, and other views in general, for two main reasons.

I think I can relatively safely say that most people on this site enjoy debate. Personally, I really enjoy talking about these sorts of things, learning more about new ideas, and perspectives that I didn't know about before, along with the satisfaction of getting your point across well.

Second of all, I think that, especially in terms of religion, discussion aids towards self discovery. From people asking you questions, and examining your beliefs, you're asked things you'd never think of, forcing you to look at your beliefs in a new way. I've met few people that actually change their mind, but I often develop my ideas simply by putting them down in words, and having people asking questions about them.

Hit the nail on the head. Without debate and inquisition, then humanity would never learn anything. Over the past few centuries, the unprecedented surge in scientific discoveries has been largely aided by people who refuse to merely accept what someone in a higher position tells them is right. Although, having said that, one must be careful not to be too forceful. Everyone should enter a debate with a willingness to alter their views, if they acknowledge a superior and irrefutable argument.

Side: argue

I agree, but once people get to a either a certain level of debating, or a low of intelligence, or simply too great a difference in perspective and opinions, they can debate forever without a clear winner emerging. In these cases, neither side truly wins, and therefore, neither side changes their opinion.

For example, one of the most entrenched beliefs, religion. Have you ever seen a debate in which someone accepted that their belief was incorrect? I know I haven't.

I'm not supporting this, simply being realistic. it's much less common on other topics though, for sure.

What if someone is dead-set in what they believe in? If they enter an argument refusing to give any ground, and the other person is in the same boat, is there any point in the debate?

I'm not taking anything away from your points. Yours, and Ben's are very good indeed! Just trying to get more great points out of it xD

Why not both?

It's fun to hear both sides of an opinion, especially on something like religion, but you can argue and still accept the others views.

Side: Both

Yep I'm with her. I usually start arguing, then before it gets too big if it doesn't look like they're gonna listen, I just say they can believe whatever they want.

I will never argue my religious views trying to convince others, but I will defend them. It helps me learn how to defend my arguments were I to say...

? Occam's razor trumps the cosmological argument, in that it is used to show that a myriad of other arguments are superior. Typically these other arguments do not support the same conclusion.

I wasn't implying even a connection between those arguments.

It is better to argue or discuss, if you will, your religious views than to roll over like a dog and accept defeat. People disagree all the time, that is just how life is but you know how people progress and evolve? By discussing and arguing and realising that maybe their view isn't actually the right one. Now I'm not saying that when you are in an argument or discussion you should yell and point and never admit you're wrong, I'm saying that if you think you can back up your views and beliefs you should argue but if you realise that you prefer the views of beliefs of others then you should accept those as yours instead.

I think it is better to accecpt there religous views. I don't really care what religion you choose. Its the person's choice whether they want to believe in that specific religion or not. I have no problem with people believing in a different religion than me it was there choice to believe in that and I accecpt there beliefs. :)

If people had not challenged your views, do you think you'd know as much about them as you do know? We haven't changed your opinion, and don't ever expect to, but by our constant questions, I'd be amazed if you haven't learnt more about your religion and your own opinions than you knew before.
