Is it me or CD has become astray of its purpose?

I been off CreateDebate for about a week because I wanted to expriment what would occur during the week I was off.

The results shown that the site has become a battlefield where users debate peacefully for about 4 rounds of posts and suddenly, it will escalate to a battle. Many debates were about users on this site rather than the natural flow of common debates. They were targeted towards Ismaila, Prodigee, DrSaunders, etc. (Mainly, Prodigee.) Although, the site has been raising in statistics and overall has grown to a new height, things have changed since the first day I joined this site till the last (don't be mislead by my points, I've been here for about a year.)

So, the question is: has this site loss at least a little focus from its actual purpose? Its as if, CD stood for CreateDrama rather than CreateDebate. And if you affirm or negate this perspective, please tell me why. Things got to change for the better!

I agree.

It's because of the lack of moderation. Some people must be banned (Ismaila and anyone like her, trolls who go too far with their crap), it is simply necessary.

How many potential good users have turned away while seeing this kind of crap going on? And how many have left because of it?

Nummi,

I challenege your comments. How do you create a site where people are free to speak their mind (crap or not) but then turn around and say let's ban people. I think ignoring what you don't like is better than banning a couple of people who you find create less than your calibur of activity on the site.

There's a line that if crossed should be dealt with swiftly, like what Ismaila has done. What has she given to this site other than keeping people back from what they came here for? Her influence here is negative to the purpose of the site, as the owner you should be able to see that very clearly. And, it is createdebate, not some simple discussion forum or communication forum - we've got facebook and similar sites for that. Making some funny debates or comments (trolling) from time to time is okay, but if there is too much of it and nothing is done it is no longer a debating forum, it is simply a forum. Spamming the site, any site for that matter, with excessive worthless crap is never good.

As to ignoring what you don't like. I bet very many have done just that, some of those were part of this forum.

Those who go too far is not hard to notice, and would be wise to deal with quickly.

I agree, but I almost want to disagree for the sake of having an argument!

You're so ornery ;)

As to the number of users... and getting that number as high as possible. Idiotic. Quality matters not quantity.

Take it like this, ten tons of shit is ten tons of shit.

I understand well where this kind of mentality comes from... current economics that is based on money. Capitalism - where only numbers matter, and where almost no one cares what the number really stands for. As long as it's as high as possible almost no one gives a fuck. And then, one day, you notice that there are some issues, with quality, people are angry, and all shit breaks loose.

Side: I agree.

Are you willing to pay for "quality?"

This site needs a large number of users in order to pay the bills. If you want less users, then the users have to pay. How else are the bills going to get paid?

Your right, it my fault for leaving these kids alone without parental supervision.

Side: I disagree.

When you visit the site, check the leader board to see who's on top. If it's me, you'll know that there are some good quality debates. ;)

Side: I disagree.

Here's a good debate you can sink your teeth into ;)

I am answering over here because while I agree, this is a temporary situation. There are quarterly cycles like this...a few new vocal users join in shake things up and then suddenly stop shaking things up. You will see that the cycle is almost over.

Side: I disagree.

It has actually been interesting to notice such patterns on CD. It's part of what makes the site as endearing for me personally.

Side: I disagree.

I agree with Andy. I've been here for almost 4 years now? Anyway, I've seen the cycle. You just have to wait it out. Then I'll be on top again ;)

You like to be on top don't you? ;)

Arguing, in a sense, is a form of debating. So as long as we do that then we're still using the site for what it was made for, even if the topics seem to lack any brain. But as Andy and Joe have said, it's just an endless cycle on CD, what's interesting to me is how many more people are involved now :)

Side: I disagree.

It has done exactly what you said it did, even I recently posted an argument concerning another debater, but I don't think it has become astray I think it's adapting to suit the debates of it's users.

A week ago, when you were last on it's users wanted to debate about real world issues, politics, gaming, etc. After you left the users slowly began to find new things to fight about. In this case it was one another.

The site should ban some people who aren't really trying to debate, but we can meet it halfway, and report those people, ignore those people, and ban them from our debates where we want real opinions and answers.
