Is it true that ENGLANDians are trained to call suspected Americans "Canadians?"
I heard that ENGLANDians are taught to always ask "Are you Canadian?" when they think someone is American, because falsely accused Canadians will be offended but falsely accused Americans will not. I didn't mean for this to be a perspectives debate, but too late now.

No this is not true at all. Whenever I or anyone I know hears someone speak with an accent which is ambiguous to whether it is American or Canadian we assume it is American, I suppose because there are more Americans out there than Canadians. Oh and by the way the term is "Englishmen" not "ENGLANDians". 2

No, I call myself a Brit, it isn't offensive. Also Brit and Englishman are different because a Brit could be a Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish person as well as some one from England. It annoys me when you yanks think that England/English and Britain/British are interchangeable. * |
