Is it worse to have a movie with heavy violence than it is to have a movie with sex?

In the United States, most people will accept a movie with heavy violence, but movies with sex are cosidered mature and many people do want anybody under 18 to see sex-filled movies. In Europe, though, these positions are reversed. Sex is an open topic and violence is often discouraged for audiences that are not mature.

Do you think that it is worse to have a movie with heavy violence than it is to have a movie with sex?

In the United States, many people are against teens seeing sex in a movie, but they are okay with them seeing heavy violence. In Europe, people are more open with sex and less open with violence. The United States has much higher teen pregnancy rates and has much more violence.

Hm...this is an interesting question that in both cases boils down to, "It depends on how it's presented."

When it comes to violence, I think that in an entertaining movie, it is usually glorified, and it is very gruesome and not pleasant to watch; personally I don't see why people find it so entertaining. However if it's something like a historical fiction drama about a war, then I think that violence is necessary to get the point across about the horrors of the situation, as long as it's realistic and doesn't make it seem worse than what actually happened. Still, wars can be pretty gruesome and directors have every right not to hold back on that if that's what they're going for.

As far as sex goes...well, personally, I have no problem with sexuality as long as the characters are adults, because once you have a stable life, house, etc., sexuality is a pretty awesome thing. I don't have a problem with pornography either, just as long as people separate themselves from it and don't expect sex to be like that. But sexual movies should not be shown to kids and teenagers who are easily impressionable and risk thinking that that kind of thing is acceptable at their stage in life.

So, in conclusion: keep the violence for the war dramas, and show the sexual movies to adults.

The double standard exists and one movie with violence is escapes the NC-17 rating while the movie containing graphic sexual scenes is slapped with a NC-17 rating.

The overall seriousness of sex in movies and television is one of the worst things to happen to sex.

I don't have a problem with pornography. I think porn is just fine, especially if it's not even acted out. I'm talking about two people being recorded having sex, or a group of people having sex.

However, sex in entertainment is absolute crap. It's part of the indoctrination that we put unto our children in believing that THIS is what sex is. An act between two people who love each other, and that it HAS to be edgy and taboo in order to be right.

Violence is stylized, but violence isn't natural. It's as natural as a primitive man settling his disputes, yet we are not primitive and we have the voice of reason. Free love and orgies do not harm or infringe on another, but any kind of violence does. If we apply sex to film and out of the hands of us ourselves, we are turning sex into acting.

Now, don't get me wrong. I enjoy all kinds of artistic works. I don't really have a problem with the existence of sex scenes and badly acted pornography. They are appropriate for our current times. But considering that movies are fake, our goal should make it so that any view of sex in movies ought be highly scrutinized since we are all so used to the act. Just how a Navy Seal will often laugh at the inaccuracies of a generic war film. Only when a war film could truly capture the sincerity of the situation and the realism is when a Navy Seal would applaud the film.

As people who are restricted by the hegemony of sex, most of us do not have a luxury to laugh at the ridiculousness of generic sex in film.

A sex scene sticks in your mind (mine anyway) more than a violent scene.
