Which is laughably feministic. How a woman who trained as an actress, having no real formal education, and became an activist can write so blatantly biased a book and yet be so highly esteemed and accepted just shows how politically motivated our society is.

Brownhill bases her hypothesis on rape on contact with rape victims, using their assumptions and interpretations of the event to color how she ultimately interpreted rape. There are many flaws with that sort of reasoning.

From an evolutionary biological perspective [see added link below] it is hypothesized that:

males that cannot effectively compete may employ rape as the only behavioral alternative, or depending on circumstances of relative status and family composition, they may incorporate rape into a repertoire of other behavioral patterns, including low commital pairbonding with one or more females and/or investing available resources toward sister's offspring.

This seems to me to make much more sense than the exclusive and challenging-to-comprehend claim that rape is only about power and violence. Of course, that depends on how you define power (but not violence); power in the sense of wanting [power over] progeny could be one interpretation in your favor.

Randy Thornhill & Craig T. Palmer in their The Natural History of Rape: Biological Bases of Sexual Coercion argue that

although a given rapist may have numerous motivations for committing a rape, social scientists have failed to prove that sex is not one of these. Nor have social scientists seriously and honestly considered the vast evidence showing that rapists are sexually motivated. Although we agree that culture (= social learning) plays a major role in the cause of rape, we challenge the notion that rape only occurs when males are taught by their cultures to rape [Brownmiller's argument in paragraph 3]. Rape not only appears to occur in all known cultures, but in a wide variety of other species where there is certainly no cultural encouragement of such behavior

and that

Recent research indicates that these environmental factors [of rape] include certain learning experiences during boys’ upbringing such as the conditions of poverty, limited enduring relationships and father absence.

This debate is about rape.

I maintain that statutory rape may still be an apt example.

After all, in nearly half (20, I last read) of American states, it is illegal to have sex with a minor such that even if one has asked for and received false identification indicating the individual has surpassed the age of consent one can still be convicted of statutory rape without mens rea. Were prostitution to be legalized, prostitutes could be regulated, the young ones could be kept out, and men could face a decreased likelihood that they be brought up on charges for unwittingly engaging in statutory rape.

If this is the case, why not just restrict sexual activity to that which is consensual??

Which is precisely what increasing the access to prostitutes would combat. As it is now, men who visit a prostitute in some states face being put onto the sex offender registry (surely an overly broad interpretation of 'registerable sex crime').

And don't tell me that there is no lack of access when prostitution is illegal, because that would be total bullshit.
