Is life a popularity contest?

What actually controls what we do?  Do we do what we want to or do we do that which makes us popular?

Yes

VS.

No

Does one go to a party or a game for any of reason except to be seen? I think not. The world with all its vanity, has but motive. Popularity it is everywhere. High school never ended. Forever doomed to be that popular one. U-tube is just life on the Internet, do what you must to be seen. Popular at last.

Popularity is a dominant part of life, however, life does not equal a popularity contest. You seem to forget that some people go to a party or a game for entertainment, socialization, and/or other reasons. You seem to forget that High School did end, and most people actually move on with their lives, despite what some people may have thought about them. As for Youtube, people that stream via webcam and create videos of themselves wish to be seen. The same cannot be said for others, such as those uploading professional sporting videos, tutorials/help videos, and more.

So again; popularity is a dominant part of life, but popularity does not equal life!

Side: No

Yes, I can agree that popularity is a major aspect of life but not as far as suggesting it is a popularity contest.

Life as a popularity contest is a illusion because of today's media and entertainment culture with reality television, sports, and etc.

Does it not equal life? We live with the desire to keep up with the Jones, for what? To keep from slipping out of the spotlight that is popularity. Why does one buy the last fashion, cars, inventions, etc.? The fear of being unpopular is one of mankind's greatest fears. There is only a handful of people that do not seek popularity and what they seek resembles it greatly. What is the difference between fortune and fame ? One you can buy fame, the other opens the door to fortune.

Popularity is a big thing; to some it is an issue, to some it is a goal, to others... it means nothing. We cannot assume that popularity dominates the lives of everyone, as life is more than just a popularity contest. Popularity may tie together with some of these goals, but the key point here is that popularity does not equal life!

If you wanted to become a doctor, and you wanted to do it because you wanted to save lives, thats not popularity is it? Sure, the image is there, and sure, it probably looks great when you save a human life, but popularity isn't a dominant part of saving lives. Popularity doe not equal saving lives!

If you wanted to become a professional football player, and you wanted to do it because you loved football and wanted to make a career out of it, thats not popularity is it? Again, we see the image of a flashy, professional football player, but it is all about winning the championship trophy and working hard at the sport you love. That probably has a lot to do with popularity, with image, but popularity does not equal a professional football player.

From these two examples, anyone should be able to derive the fact that while popularity may have much to do with a person, it doesn't complete a person. Life is about living to the fullest and this reflects on you as a person. You want to be popular? Maybe now, but certainly not forever. there is going to be a time when you don't care about popularity, and that proves the fact that popularity isn't what life is all about.

If you really wanted to be popular forever, that wouldn't a great life would it? Sure, you'll probably see some spotlight here and there, but what about when you don't? You'll probably end up scratching and clawing your way back to the top, which will probably make you look inhumane, or simply horrible. At the end of the day, is that popularity? Is that a life worth living? I think not.

My final point: life has a different meaning to different people. To some this means living a morally good life, but then, morality would have different meanings to different people wouldn't it? To others, it means getting what you want in your lifetime, which may lead to a happy, sad, or plain lifetime of living. Ending with one question:

What is the meaning of life?

The meaning of life is easy? Life is merely a purgatory between birth and death. Give me a challenge. Peer pressure controls us and so how others see us is important. In fact there is very little we do that doesn't fit into to the tradition that has already been established. Follow Simon wherever he goes. Simon says join in and do what your friends are doing. To do otherwise would be unpopular.

"Life is merely a purgatory between birth and death."

So, what exactly is that purgatory? How do you define it? How is it decided upon? Until you know the answer to these kind of questions you will never convince me with that argument.

"Peer pressure controls us and so how others see us is important."

So, if I was offered a cigarette at the age of 10, I would take it simply because peer pressure cannot be acted against? Need to reconsider that argument?

"Follow Simon wherever he goes."

Who is Simon? Is he God? Is he our parents? Not everybody believes in God, and most children naturally rebel against parental authority sooner or later in life. Many people who commit crimes don't actually think about the punishment; they just do it because they want to.

"Simon says join in and do what your friends are doing."

If Simon said "jump into a pool of acid and stay in there until you die," would you still do it?

"To do otherwise would be unpopular."

Probably, and yet, some people still do otherwise. This is mostly due to my statement on morality; it has different definitions for different people. Rather than repeat myself further, I'd rather you just read it over again.

Life as a whole is not a popularity contest, but to be successful in some areas of society you need to be popular to progress. Get that promotion you've been looking for or that new job you have applied for etc.

Life isn't a popularity contest. Life is just... living... that's like the only driving force of life. Everything we do is centered off of sex and food and, how we can get said sex and food.

One could also say life is just a means to an end. The truth is that we are shallow and superfical human beings. Sex and food are controlled by what is popular. Bang an ugly girl lately? Eaten at a crumby little hole in the wall lately?

Popularity we live and breath it.
