Is marching band a sport?

I'm sort of afraid to ask this one. Being in marching band myself, I see firsthand the multiple physical things we do that should make marching band a sport, but others disagree. Let's see what you guys (and girls) think.

Yes, it is a sport

Yes, Marching Band should be considered a sport due to the fact that it must be practiced daily and works many muscles in your body. I personally am on a fantastic drumline and I can tell you from experience that it is a very active exercise, in addition to a sport. If you do not believe that it is a sport, you are not part of a marching band and have never experienced the workout or the intense concentration required in competition.

Yes, because it is a coordinate physical team activity and can be measured in ways to compare marching band to marching band for competition. In comparison, if it was bandstand playing then although there is a physical act of playing instruments it's mostly sitting down and not a sport.

sport

spĂ´rt/Submit

noun

1.

an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

By the definition of sport alone, I would say that it is indeed a sport. There is a level of physical exertion that goes above usual normal daily activities, there is a 'team' and there is competition and entertainment.

Marching band is a Team? Last time I checked, a bunch of gay kids playing instruments were walking around trying to find their place on earth?

Marching band is a Team?

Yes. Anyone who has ever been in a team knows what a team is.

Why are you concerned with their sexual orientation? You also sound kind of bitter there, got denied a place among them?

If football is a sport, then marching band is a sport. If you need that much courage to play football, then you're gonna need a hell-a-lot more to march in a band!

Yes, Marching band is a sport. Not only the physical exertion that is involved, but the time. A high school marching band can and has put more practice time in then their football team. That is just in field time, not playing through the show at home. There is also the definition of a sport from Google. Finally the competitions are like a soccer tenement. Lots of band/teams, and they put on a show/play against each other. And the grading of a band is the score of a band or team. If you have fun in a sport, then good job, people have fun in marching band too.

Obviously no, it isn't a sport. It's music. All musicians who become proficient at their instruments have to develop physical skills through repetition and practice. That doesn't make playing guitar a sport.

Bands, people working together as a TEAM, do compete and beat other opponent bands. Concert band is only music, however marching band requires physical control and mobility as well as musical and intellectual talents. Not only that, but marching band also fits exactly to the definition of a sport according to Google. It takes practice to play a sport and it takes even more practice and time to preform a superior show. Not to mention the skill involved with memorizing your sets, how many steps are between each set, memorizing the music, keeping form, knowing when there is a rest and on top of that playing an instrument. The instrument itself could also weigh a lot such as tubas, sousaphones, or, depending on your size, a baritone and during the entire show, apart from visuals or rests, you have to hold up the instrument.

If any of you guys think marching band is a sport, you are delusional. I wish i could blow air for 2 hours a day and say I'm doing something competitive. And any of you who say that marching band is tiring are just unathletic period. Come at me with this, I'd like to see how many of you guys are dumbasses

Side: No, it is not a sport

I would call it a competition rather than a sport. A sport is a competition where the opponents compete by predominantly using physical gifts to outdo each other. Marching band predominantly uses musical gifts to outdo each other.

I agree and disagree, because marching band does use physical gifts, along with musical gifts to outdo other bands. When in a marching competition, the band gets graded on music, marching technique, stance, and many other things that do involve physical etiquette. But each band gets graded on a 1-5 scale, 1 being superior, and 5 being fire your band director. There are many steps to decide who wins a marching competition, and it's frankly too much to type.
