The 10 commandments in the Bible are:

1. ONE: 'You shall have no other gods before Me.'

2: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.'

3: 'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.'

4: 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.'

5: 'Honor your father and your mother.'

6: 'You shall not murder.'

7: 'You shall not commit adultery.'

8: 'You shall not steal.'

9: 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.'

10: 'You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.'

Commandments 2,3, 4 and 5 are just ways to ensure obedience and the rest are carried out day to day as law abiding citizens.

Every social institution exerts social control to some extent, whether this is the main purpose of said institutions is another matter entirely.

Religion is the most successful form of social control. It has a code of moral conduct that people must follow without asking questions. And even if they ask 'why??" They get the answer "god says so".So they feel weak and powerless in front of god and obey anything they are told giving control to the priests. And in religion it involves repeating prayers and when you repeat something enough times you start believing it is the truth.

Side: yes

Well, there is no doubt that religion is a form of social control.

…nothing more than a form of social control?

There are extraverted social elements in orthodox religion that want to control behavior (Christianity, Judaism, Islam), and you also have introverted non-social elements that don't have interest in ethical behavior specifically (Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Gnosticism) Most religions have a mixture of both, so it's impossible to generalize in this way as though it's all about control. Keep in mind that Jesus told his disciples to violate the sabbath.

Is there a difference between good and evil?

Must I fear what others fear? What nonsense!"
